CLOSED: CLOSED: One last visitor to my yard

Manchester, NH

This is a LARGE stick bug or walking cane, or whatever it's called, but I was wondering if anyone knew just what kind. I actually found it stuck in my hair while I was trimming my trees and actually thought it WAS a twig until I pulled it off and it caught on my shirt! Great camoflage! Anyway, it's approximately four inches long, (five when stretched out pretending to be wood) and absolutely pet-worthy, but happier outside. I put it into an mountain ash tree because the bark was the same colour, so did I do right, I hope?

This could be a northern/common walkingstick, Diapheromera femorata - see http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/126/
They will feed on a variety of tree/shrub leaves, and can be kept as 'pets' - see http://www.petbugs.com/caresheets/D-femorata.html
I recall an outbreak of these in northeastern North Dakota some 45 years ago, when they were so abundant that the sound of their eggs hitting the ground in the woods was like a gentle rain.

They're so gentle and I love them, but they're rarely seen around here, so it seems. Thank you for the links and sorry I was gone for so long. It took me forever to rid myself of the yellowjacket problem I had.
