This insect seemed totally unphased by my presence and by the camera lens coming so close, so I take it it's relatively harmless around humans?

Yes . . . you're right . . . it DOES appear to be a sort of thread-waisted wasp. Although none of them had the same white on the legs and head, I guess, from that article, there are many different varieties. Thank you . . . you're very knowledgable in you bugs!!
