I have 3 different types of sunflowers....Aztec, Velevt queen and Tinthonia Torch, I am new to the whole collection aspect, but want to start this year.....oh also coneflowers as well.....How do I know when to harvest them? and can I find some photos of the flower heads to depct the exact time of collect...

When to cultivate Various SunFlowers seeds?
On most flowers, I wait until they turn brown, but I noticed with the rain that one of my sunflower head is getting moldy, due to the 4 days continuos rain that we've gotten. So on the other head, I waited for a month after all the petals have fallen off and most of the little green (don't know what they're call) thing on top of the seeds turn brown.
I waited until I saw the gold finches at them. Then I clipped the large flowers and took what I wanted, then hung the rest out for the birds. On some of my others, I just go clip a few that have just faded, then gather a few. But in general, my sunflowers reseed themselves, thanks in part to the birds.
