Hummingbird Moths and 'Album'

Divernon, IL(Zone 5b)

Last night a couple of Hummingbird Moths were fixated on my last blooming lily, L. speciosum 'Album'.

This pic illustrates them better, both on the same bloom.

Beautiful, jmorth! Do they seem to prefer the albums over the rubrums? I'm down to 1 album but still have lots of rubrums. How do you know you have these visitors after dark? Flashlight? Sorry, my inquisitive mind wants to know. I want to see these in my garden. They must be out there. Buggy has them in her lilies so I must have them also.

Beautiful shots!!!!!!! I usually saw them in the early evenings in IA. No idea if they stuck around in the dark.

I guess I thought they come out after dark because the photos look dark. But then digital photos can look like that towards dusk, right? Mine seems to work like that, making the photos look a bit more spectacular, lol! Really, I want to see this in my garden. I just went out there with my flashlight and saw squat, nada....

pardalinum, I don't really know which speciosum they'd prefer, but I suspect either; for me, right now, the albums are numerous and the rubrum has but a single bloom left. Just as kooger noted, the moths arrive when the sun is definitely going down, they stay past sunset. The best time is dusk. Flashlights are accepted as a viable moth locater. I'm familiar to the Buggy pic.

Superb pictures!

I tried taking some pictures of the hummer moths earlier this summer, good thing it wasn't print film! Those guys never stop.

Fantastic pics! The little buggers are too fast for my camera ~ what are you using?

Canon Power Shot IS (8 Mega Pixel w/ 10X optical zoom).
There's some more photos in the Hummingbird and Butterfly forum.

Very neat, Jmorth! I usually have those little guys buzzing my petunias. It scared the heck out of me the first time I saw one. :) LOL

Beautiful pictures! I have a really tough time capturing their wings cause they're so fast.

I'm looking for plants to attract them to my garden. I've added the lilies to my list---then again I love to add more lilies anyway....

I think that the Flowering Tobacco, which yearly self-seeds, is the biggest draw here; the lilies a bonus. I've also observed them in self-seeded 4 o'clocks.
I was able to click a couple more pics of them tonight, but only in the Nicotiana.
