Doll to ward off evil spirits...

Mysore, India(Zone 10a)

Some people, esp. when they build new and bigger structures, put up a doll like this, using a clay pot for the head and I think straw to stuff the 'body', to ward off evil spirits that may have an evil eye on it. Such things are common, but not everywhere. There is one apartment building coming up behind our house and they have this doll on prominent display.

Very interesting, Dinu. Is the practice common in one particular type of religion or just used more as a just-in-case there might be evil spirits around?

I wonder if they have a doll to ward off evil bee's...
omgoodness I'm having a rough time with these little beasts!

That is very interesting. I love how different cultures view the world.

We have a similar tradition in our house. I got this when I got my first place back in the 70's. A kitchen witch. She wards off evil spirits in the home.

I think it is the belief that stays on in one region than religion. I can say that these things are more common in Hindu communities, but probably more 'rampant' in the villages where superstitions stay on almost for ever.

Interesting, kwanjin. Kitchen witch!

This is a mask they have put up opposite our house, yet another new construction coming up.

Nice mask, Dinu. How big is it? The doll reminds me of our scarecrows here. They are large dolls stuffed with straw put out in fields to scare birds away from corn. In the fall you might see them in gardens in town as decorative items.

It's neat. That would scare ME away. ☺

That's about a foot high and across. Scare crows are used here also, in the agricultural fields. Often, some plastic or cloth is attached to it in such a way that it makes a movement in the breeze for added results!

Just so, Dinu. Love it.
