its body is larger than a quarter and its webs are strong (walked face first into one) so creepy!

This appears to be a marbled orbweaver (Araneus marmoreus; family Araneidae), a common denizen of the north woods. This species is highly variable in color/pattern, as you can see by googling the specific name for images. Like other orb weavers, it is harmless to humans.
