Well, here are the new chickens that I got last night from my work friend who is moving. We got 6 hens. There are 4 light brahmas, one sort of barred rock type but she is brown, not black, and then another type I have no idea about.
Here are the light brahmas. You can see that one is way lighter than the others. I presume that is natural variation.
New Chickens For Me
Claire, that is a very inventive (and cool!) looking coop and run!
Pretty girls, too. :~)
I need that extra light fluffy one Claire.. That would be my *White Rosie**... LOL She is a pretty girl!!
wow, those are some really dark ones, at first i was thinking dark brahmas, but like you said, just variation!
those backs are bad, they need a healing salve and isolate anyone htat pecks on them! if you can spare the eggs, feed them to the bareback hens, raw [no shell]... they will grow back feathers in no time!
wow, that hen isn't barred, more cuckoo coloring.
and the other one, golden lacing on the front, very Wyandotte type, but then game comb and partridge coloring...
I don't know, but I got a silver and black laced hen very much like that out of this spring's hatch. Her comb (I still don't know combs) is longer, not bigger. Her daddy was a black sex-link,JG cross and her momma was either a sex-link or barred rock (or her aunty out of the same pairing). So could yours be some offspring of one of the barred birds from the same place? Granted I only really know my own crosses, but still so much really great patterning seems to have come from barred rock crosses in one way or another.
TF -Wyandotte how?(please) I'm still trying to straighten out all of these different birds and derivations...partridge coloring?
Grow, I will never get it figured out.
I have something called "Rooster Booster" Pick-No-More that I got from My Pet Chicken. It's supposed to stop pecking. I don't think any of the girls are pecking at her - I haven't seen anything like that. It was just the roo, I think.
Here's another pic of the light brahmas showing variation.
Oh, btw, the ramp between the coop and pen needs major work. Kelly is embarrassed that I took a pic of it. We had to get something thrown together fast for that. It will be much improved!
What type of healing salve would be good? That's new to me....
Would bag balm work? Or Burt's bees hand salve? Or what?
They really are beauties, Claire!!!(siiigh)
They're gorgeous Claire!

Isn't the "white" one the Columbian feather pattern?
Gosh, I have no idea. I don't even know what the Columbian feather pattern is....
The person I got these from said the brown one with the penciling/edging on her feathers is an Araucana. I'm not sure about that...
It's sad, but I was reading about plumage last night--and I always think (that is sad too) that the Columbian pattern should look different--darker, more intricate. But apparently it was named after the 19C Columbian exposition where the Wyandotte was on display. It is basically white with black tips on the hackles, wing tips and tail. To me it looks just like the Delaware only a little more definite--but they never call the Delaware "Columbian." If you click on the picture of the hen on the bird bath below, you will see a nice Columbian Wyandotte--the other pictures are nice too:

Well, I got the rest of the girls tonight - 8 of them! They are with the other 6 now.
From what I can tell, there are a couple of Auracana types, black ones. They seem to have beards and sort of tufty looking heads and unusual combs. There are a couple of lighter colored ones I have no clue about, and a couple of dark mixes.
I also got one roo, a barred rock I think. I will have to post pics of everybody soon. Tomorrow is a busy day but maybe Thursday. I hope you can all help me figure it out.
That makes 17 hens, 4 bantams, 6 chicks, and a roo. I gave 4 chicks away this evening to a lady from Craig's List. She seemed really nice and I was happy to share my surplus. She just wants them for pets/eggs.
Claire
the brown one with the penciling/edging on her feathers is an Araucana
not sure which you mean, the one i said was wyandotte looking?
grownut, i was basing it on body type alone, not coloring at all, since wy's come in all colors...
claire, those brahmas will be the sweetest gentlest things once you start handling them. they are called the "Gentle Giants" they come in Light, Dark, and Buff...
catscan, reading and thinking is GOOD not SAD lol... i REALLY like the colroing on my light brahmas [sold one roo yesterday], the delaware chicks are coming in colored dark all over the wing area. somewhere i have pics of the baby light brahmas, thought they were silver laced cochins. in my Chick's Pics thread, if you wanna see how the light brahmans developed.
would you bleive i haven't aken pics of my new chicks?
L2G2, yeah, tell me about it. my oldest, almost 10 yo son and i were observing the asstd bunch before bedtime, and he wanted to know if we were collecting rar breeds of birds LOL, and if we had the araest or the oldest! i sure want to keep all the blues i have left, some of which may be barbed duccles, and the two nankins, the two silkies, two speckled sussex, 3 white crested balck polish, all the golden laced polish, soem of the buff and red and buff laced polish, ummm, all the frizzles, and every thing blue. doesn't leave much left for sale! [they are all still quarantined anyhow]
tf
TF - yes, the one you said was Wyandotte looking is the one Jim said is an araucana, but I think he might be wrong. There is another pic of her in the post that says "another pic of tufty-head". She is behind and to the left of tufty. Doesn't show her whole body though. I will try to take a better pic soon.
Claire
Goldie and the blacks (except Tufty and the small one) are very like my current hatch in build, color, and comb. The golds are young yet, but hopefully they'll catch up with her gorgeousness there...Goldie B'ckawn'
And what breed is your current hatch, grownut? Or is it also unknown?!
Goldie B'ckawn..... ROTFL....
It's in the 12th posting here. I started out with black sex-links which are a barred rock cross. Got my broody a black (jersey giant) rooster. She produced 3 gorgeous roos 1black w/ tiny copper ruff, 1 copper on black, 1 gold on black like Luvs HP in color, and 1 all black, black eyed hen. Then I added some barred rock hens. The JG made good dumplings so his sons are responsible for siring the current hatch. Just about everybody had sex-link type markings which I couldn't read. Every chick had barred rock coming from both parents. I forget what gender of what bird needs to cross to get a black sex link, but I suspect that some of the colors and mixes I see in your flock (and mine) are due to that barring trait as it seems to be a strong one. (and you DO have that barred male and some interestingly flashy Brahmas)
Oops, I had forgotten about those posts way up there!! LOL!!
Very interesting mixes! All I know about this flock is that it supposedly started out with black australorps, araucanas, barred rocks, and light brahmas. I think all the ones I have are various offspring of the originals and mixes. It's quite a fun flock because there is so much variation!
OK, RIR or New Hampshire roo w/ barred rock hen. Know what you mean. DH and I were just looking at our new batch and figuring who we should use next year. They are all so pretty. And I REALLY need a camera.
