dwarf mahonias?

I reallly like this handsome plant but the size property I have won't allow a full sized one. Is there such a thing as a dwarf mahonia?

I'm guessing you might be referring to Mahonia bealei as "full-sized"?

Can't vouch for the southern heat zone tolerance, but I think the species Mahonia aquifolium and Mahonia repens would certainly not be too tall. I think that they can be colonizers of sorts, given great growing conditions.

My parents' house in Nicholasville KY has had a patch of Mahonia aquifolium for about 40 years that has never been taller than about 36 inches, and the total spread might be reaching about 10 feet in rough diameter. It is rather dry and shady where this is growing.

It's shady here but normally wet. We have had a very dry summer for 2 years now. However, right now we are getting remnants of Hurricane Faye and it is supposed to rain for most of a week.
