seeding a rose a sharon

Hyde Park, NY

I have a rose a sharon that blooms beautifully!! However it seem like there are buds falling off left and right!!! I would like to reseed and have more of these bushes but I am not sure how to go about it. I read that they have to die and dry on the plant then they can be planted for another bush? I have take them off the ground and unwrapped them (as they are all rolled up when they drop) and they seem to be moist on the inside with a white stem and what I believe to be seeds on each side. I did unwrap one and it was dry and there were small brown seeds. I believe that is what they are. I am TOTALLY confused as how to go about growing and seeding for other plants. ANY HELP OUT THERE??????

Dont seed them - do cuttings in the spring. When the leaves are just starting to push out buds - not green yet! - cut pencil leaf sized branches/twigs. Place in a moist soil less mixture and keep moist, in 6 to 8 weeks you will have roots, keep shaded and in pots for the first year. Set in garden second year - much faster and better.

Dont worry they will reseed too - but you never know what you are going to get that way!

What exactly are you picking up off the ground? From your description it sounds like you're picking up the spent flowers, and if that's what you're doing those don't have seeds in them. If the plant makes seeds (which they won't always), the seed pods will eventually form where the flower used to be on the plant.

Also, next time for gardening questions you would be better off posting in the Beginner Gardening forum--this forum is for questions about the Plant Files database and not as many people follow threads here so you'll get more help in the Beginner Gardening forum. Here's a link in case you don't know where it is. http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/f/b_gardentalk/all/

Hi dumass,

I love these trees, they are beautifull I have one that is white with pink in the middle and double purple ones and double pink ones all of the one that i have i always do like they said above and cut off one of the small limbs stick in good soil and theres you another tree.. I also for mothers day planted 2 limbs of each tree together in a pot and after they all had time to root gave it to my grandmother in law and now it has blooms of each color its great.. It looks like one tree blooms all colors.. This plant is very easy to root.. My unlcle said to cut a limb and put in the ground where u want it to be, lay it on its side (not completly flat) and put a rock at the bottom to keep the soil moist where the roots will be.. Havent tried it though.. Also if you will look around it you will find baby sprouts you can pull those us and put them in a pot until they get a little bigger then place them whre you want them..

i will try to find a pic of our trees and send ya
