CLOSED: An Empty Shell; What Kind of Beetle? Please I.D.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

The beetle perhaps has shed its shell? I found these empty shells in various spots in the garden during the summer. Please help I.D. Thanks in advance.

The bug's shell was found clinging on the leaves as shown here.

Kim,

These typically come out of the ground at night, and find a good spot to latch on to and dry out. I found this one on my back porch one night July 23rd. I put it on a stick........

But during the night, he fell of the stick, and onto my finger Jade plant.
So here is what he left me the next morning.....

Ah hah! He apparently has 'morphed' and left you his empty shell. Thanks Paul for sharing the pix.

Kitten, I previously recognized the cicada with its wings and all, but I wasn't familiar with its various cycle of developmental stages. Thanks for sharing.

I can tell you from firsthand experience that those shells (and cicadas, for that matter) are a crunchy delicacy for dogs. Blech!
