The camera can't capture the glisten (for lack of a better word) that this one has!!

I just can't seem to get the faint blizzard pattern that it has with this camera. What do you think?

Holy cow exactly how big is that bloom. It is gorgeous.

meag - Very nice! I just have to ask ... what is the color of that bloom? Is it actually an orangish ... peachy ..color or is it more of a pink color? I do see a touch of blizzard in the bloom, too! Lovely!

A beautiful bloom Melanie. I'm also curious about the color.

Hi Melanie -

I have a compute virus and won't get my computer back until next week, so am using Jerry's.

I hope you tagged that bloom.

It is probably from the Rose Silk MIX. You just wouldn't believe all of the incredible blooms that I got last year, including some blizzards.

I have also gotten blooms with the Orange tones as well.

Don't you just love them. . .

Show us more!

Hope Daves will continue their photo contest this year.
If so,

Thanks all!! The first picture was taken as the sun was coming up so I guess that is why it looks peachy.
The bloom was a big 5.5". I don't know if you can tell it but it was striped on one side (can't you tell that I am a newbie).
Yes Miss Emma, you taught me well!! LOL!! All three bloom that I have like this were tagged. This one did come from your Rose Mix.

Aschaffenburg, Germany

Emma, do you think the blizzard gene somehow affects colours? Surely orange is kind of new within the range of nils (grey and brown are also relatively new, I am glad I still have seeds). I've only seen orange in ipomoea hederifolia or the quamlocit.

Unfortunately, we were attacked at our old apartment here in Morocco, so we had to move quickly and are now temporarily staying with American friends. As a result, I lost my whole amaryllis collection and the morning glories I sowed this year because I did not want to import red spider mite to the new location. This was a precautionary measure I had to take, also -- just once in my life -- I want to see morning glories w/o the mite.
Anyway, I will be starting a new batch today, I still have tons of seeds.

Martin, That's horrible. Hope you and your family are safe now.

Good job Beth.

Martin - I am sorry to hear that you had to quickly relocate. I didn't know there were problems going on in Morocco. I pray that you and your family remain safe and find a permanent new place to move to that you can successfully grow new plants! Pretty photos and MGs!

Martin,
stay safe! Let us know what happened!

Aschaffenburg, Germany

It was no physical attack as such, but some kind of witchcraft with strange things happening in the house, weird accidents -- the gas-boiler nearly exploded, we then found a rat had used the boiler pipe to come into our kitchen at night. I had seen the rat three times in the kitchen, it refused the food on the trap, but I didn't want to poison it either, thinking that his might produce an awful smell when it dies in the boiler pipe. We started having nightmares and would start fights over trifling things, really. We found a square piece of sheep skin in our washing, one that's used by local marabus. I am sharing the apartment with a Moroccan friend, and my belief in witchcraft is limited, because I believe I am protected by God as a Christian. However, in the end, xxx almost went mad, so I had to take this seriously and look for another place. Ever since we moved everything is fine. XX used to say the place is cursed, nothing will prosper here. My MGs didn't really grow phantastically well there either because of spider mite. I had noticed one day that the vine that grows on top of the landladies' roof was completely infested. So, all my attempts to get rid of the mite have naturally failed because the wind can blow the mite right back into my backyard...It was a heart-braking experience when I stripped my vines and dumped my complete amaryllis collection, the MGs are easy to replace, the amaryllis are not.

Another reason we moved was the noise we had to put up with and all the visitors that came to see my landlady. I think the place was more a hotel than an apartment, and as one thing lead to another, the final drop in the bucket was when the landlord started using a very strong smelling Chinese insecticid to kill the cockroaches in their bathroom Our bathroom is connected by an air duct and we began inhaling the toxic gases and got headaches...

It's still so hot here -- approx. 40 degrees Celsius --, so imagine a removal at these temperatures with just the two of us...and it all had to be super-quick.

Oh dear! What is marabus?

Meag848, I know what you mean by glisten! it is very unusual but only evr seen it on my morning glories...I think it has something to do with how thin the flower is, and the light is bouncing off the top as well as the bottmo being visible...theres no way else to describe it, I always thought of it as a sign of the healthy flowers and plants as it was on good growing vines with the colors I have had, especially the richer hued ones.
Martin, everything will be well as everything happens for a reason~hang in there & I am sure people are thinking good thoughts for you out here.

Martin - The minute I started reading about the problems with your old apartment, it made me think of a house that we rented briefly while our current home was being built. (This happened 17 years ago.) The TV would come on in the middle of the night. The sound volume would adjust itself by either getting very loud or no sound at all. We even switched TVs and it still happened. The lights would come on during the night or day. We also found rats coming in through the stove somehow and they were too smart to be caught in the mouse traps. We woke up one night to find thousands of carpenter ants coming down the walls and were climbing on our beds and the floor. Now THAT freaked me out! My youngest son who was only about 3 years old would wake up in the middle of the night several times a week just screaming and screaming. I saw a man and his dog inside our house several times. At first I thought it was a neighbor or somebody because they were standing in the middle of the front livingroom, but then realized it was not at all what I thought ... Of course, they vanished into thin air upon approaching them. Twice the dog ran towards me and then just disappeared before it reached me. My oldest son (who was 17 was afraid to be in the house alone after school), so he would hang out at a friend's house until we got home from work. And there were other weird things going on. We were so very glad to get out of that house! It was crazy! (Though I have actually lived in a house with worse problems.) I didn't feel threatened by this rental house except by the ants. LOL! But I think it scared the rest of my family. I called the disappearing man Mr. Greenjeans (because he wore overalls) and his dog. LOL!

Glad that you are happier in your new place. I hope it remains so. There is good and there is evil in this world and much we just don't understand. (I too am a Christian.) Am very sorry to hear that you had to leave behind your beloved collection of amaryllis. Hopefully you will have much better luck at growing plants in your new place! :-)

What kind of dog was it?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

It appeared to be a small black terrier-type. A cute dog. I really thought it was real until it just disappeared. That's when the ah ha! moment happened in my head. And yes, I did get the goose-bumps up and down my arms and the back of my neck. LOL!

I was just thinking that gives me hope that we will be with our pets in the afterlife!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I like to think of our pets as "earth angels". :-) And I truly do believe that!

My husband and I have both "seen" our dogs after they passed away.

Martin - I hope things are MUCH better at your new place. Be assured that God WILL protect you! Whenever I move into a new place, I pray & "chase out" the enemy from every room & all around the outside, too. Evil can be "leftover" from previous residents. But God is sovreign! Blessings, Samantha

When I was a kid and we bought a new house, the priest would come over to your house and sprinkle holy water on the fireplace to bless your new life there. Funny, I just remembered that now...

Sorry for having gone off-topic, meag848...
Morocco is a tough ground spiritually. I have been running increasingly into problems recently, probably because I am a bit burnt out and not so patient any more. Ramadan is just a week off from now, please pray for me, should God put it on your heart...to give me wisdom whether to stay here or take a 9 to 5 in Europe. I have seen too many people pack up and leave, not all is bad in Morocco. You can grow MGs 9 months a year and live on cheap bio products...I am trusting they don't use chemicals because I am not sure they would apply them correctly...

Martin

PS. I sowed some French ensigns, Paul's freckled nils (reverse tube) and two ipomoea turbinata in a planter yesterday.

Jacksonville, TX(Zone 8a)

Hi Martin . . .

Wow, what a horror story! I wish you safety and happiness in your new apartment.

Re your question
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=5464394
I don't think the blizzard gene affects colors, but I'm sure Ron can address this better. I say this because I have gotten blizzard patterns in many of my MGs with all colors, including a Gray MG.
Apparently the plant that Melanie got from the seed I sent her that produced this bloom
http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5451113
had the 'Orange Tone' gene, however, it is not a true orange as we have seen in some of the Ipomoea hederifolia MGs. In fact, I have gotten several Rose-Chocolate Silk blooms with this color over the years. I will look back and see if I can find one to post.

Regarding Spider Mites, they are a serious problem. I too have to deal with them.
If I am understanding you, you don't particularly like to use chemicals to treat your plants -
so my suggestion is to watch your plants carefully and at the first sign of them to immediately blast them off with water.
When your plants are completely overtaken with them, start pinching off the leaves because they will not go back to normal once the life has been sucked out of them by these little beasts and blast with water on all parts of your plants.
This Hibiscus site has some great information that I have applied to MGs
http://www.hiddenvalleyhibiscus.com/care/index.htm

Here is their link on helping to understand Spider Mites and control
GREAT INFORMATION
http://www.hiddenvalleyhibiscus.com/care/spidermites.htm

[Water Blasting: Mites do not like water and can be forcefully removed from the plants with water. They live on the undersides of leaves mostly so the water has to be directed upward in order to knock them off. They drown easily so between knocking them off and flooding them out, a good strong water spray can help control them. Unfortunately, many eggs will remain attached to the leaves so it is necessary to do the water blasting every day or every other day for a week in order to effectively control them . . .]
Additionally, this site will also give you organic and chemical recommendations.

I know Ron has probably linked many times to SPIDER MITE PREVENTION AND CARE, so maybe he can tell us one more time.

Hope this helps.

Emma

Here is one of my photos from around 2006 that shows a Rose Silk Blizzard bloom. Also, you can see the color difference in these two blooms

Emma, that last bloom is gorgeous. I think it's the large areas of white
that soften the overall color. A beautiful m glory.

Thank you Sylvia and Jackie -

I've really had some beauties over the years. Some day I will regrow all of those tagged pods from 2006.
