CLOSED: What are these bugs?
These are large milkweed bugs (Oncopeltus fasciatus) - see http://davesgarden.com/guides/bf/go/199/
How are these differ from the "assassin" bugs?
Milkweed bugs are sap feeders; assassin bugs (family Reduviidae) are mostly predaceous on other arthropods; a few species in the subfamily Triatominae are blood feeders.
suunto, many thanks for your help of not only identifying the bugs, but indepth explaination of the characteristics of the difference b/w the two type of bugs. I hereby mark this as solved.
