Candy Lily seed question

Springfield, OH(Zone 6a)

Can anyone tell me when these are ready to harvest?

My candy lily finished blooming a few weeks ago and the seed pods are still drying. When the pods start turning brown and the seeds inside are black, they are ready.

Wow , that was fast! Thanks! So, do I leave the pods to dry on the plant?

Your welcome. I took the pods off and have them drying on the back porch. I couldn't believe how many seeds came off one plant. These were winter sewn about 2 years ago. Wish I would have taken a pic...

Thank you so much! Last year a DG friend sent me a bulb, and I had 1 fan and a few blooms . This year I have a big 'ole plant , had lots of blooms, and a wole lot of seed pods. Nice to know they will bloom that fast from seed. I know what you mean about the pods!!

I pray that my blackberry lily will bloom next year. I started them at the same time and it is much smaller than the candy lily. Good luck with your seeds :)

Thanks !! :D

Just wanted to jump in and say that I've had no luck starting candy lilies in the spring. Last year I winter sowed and got a decent sprout. Not great, but about 50%. I transplanted them into the perennial bed. They're getting big -- they didn't bloom this year of course but I expect them to rival the 1g nursery size next spring.

The blackberry lilies also didn't sprout unless I winter sowed. But they had a much higher germination rate. Some of the seed I tossed directly into the bed came up too.

I usually let the seeds dry on the plant - they look like they'll just fall right off, but they are attached pretty tight. But you might want to be safe rather than sorry :)

That is good info to know, thanks!

When the pds begin to open is when I collect mine-then they are black-and as for starting them you need to make sure to use a diff method then normal-maybe try the hib way-the hot water and peroxide...something to penetrate that hard shell...

Fairy, do tell the hot water and peroxide method.

Pour ¼ C boiling water over the seeds add ¼ tsp. peroxide (you have to add this) and in a couple of days a root will be coming out of the seed. The peroxide helps to break down the seed coating. Plant them about 1/4 inch deep no more than that. Or you can just pour the water on your mix with the seeds and leave them on top. The root will find it's way to the soil.

Thanks Fairy!
