The joys of volunteers

Found this scrambling around in an obscure corner of my husband's hop yard.

I gave it some bamboo to climb and it looks quite happy now. Sorry, could't spin it upright. --M

Nice color on your Ipomoea purpurea...

Your bloom colors look like afternoon colors, so not sure what cultivar they are. I've had birds leave volunteer seeds in their droppings in some of my garden beds. Always a surprise to see something growing that you know you didn't plant there! Looks great climbing the Bamboo.

I agree with Ron -
Very unusual and pretty color on your Ipomoea purpurea

See, there's no easy way a bird could deposit seed where this is. It's partially under the side eaves of a garage. I suspect someoene's planted this there. Isn't there one called 'Grandpa Ott' ? I kinda thought it looked a bit like that.

I'm no morning glory buff, so I really don't know. It isn't a fresh, first-thing-in-the-morning photo, as you observed. health problems make it difficult for me to be up early enough to shoot and early shot.

I find it very pretty, though, and would like a little info on collecting seed from this. I don't mind if it isn't exaxtly the same as this bloom. I just like morning glories.

Melissande, I'll betcha that you'll see more volunteer seedlings of this MG next spring coming up here and there. But just to make sure, there is some great information/how-to on saving MG seeds in the Sticky index / SEED / Harvest at the top of this forum.

I once laid a branch of Casablanca lilies that had gone to seed on the stoney part of an old well, and it was just amazing that one of those seeds self-sowed right in the crack between stone and concrete. It's quite a monster plant now, can't imagine how a lily bulb big enough for such enormous flowers got itself in there to do so well.

Looks like a perfect setting for your morning glory - very pretty.

Thanks. Karen. Thought I'd read that sticky, but I missed that part.
