Take a look at this picture. I collected some seeds from a neighbor's plant. Some them are brown and shrived up (see left side of plate). Are these brown ones any good? Or only the black ones.
Thanks!

Toad Lily Seeds QUESTION
Not that I'm an expert Lili - but are your tricyrtis plants different colours? Only if so then the seed is likely to be different colours also. :-)) Just a thought.
Hmm-I have enver seen toad lily seeds that are that big......they are usually very tiny-almost minut
I asked my neighbor about those plants and he said he think they are blackberry lily. sorry.
OK-I was wondering-then ONLY the black ones are viable...
the others were harvested too early-you need to wait for the pod to ripen and be at least 1/2 open befroe harvesting the seeds
The black ones are harvested too early? or the shriveled up brown ones harvested too early?
brown ones too early-they should be black and look a little shrveled and the pod should be at least 1/2 way open B4 harvesting-sorry if I wasn't clear...viable means "good or will grow"
the pods were opened on both the brown ones and black ones, but the black ones are not shriveled up. That's why I was wondering. Does that means the black ones are not ready even though the pod was split open when I harvested?
hmmm-that is really strange-they should be black and slightly shriveled-not like raisin shriveled, but noticeable shriveling...
The black ones in your pic look like they have a slight shriveling?? I have Candy Lilies in 3 different colors and all the seeds are balck and a little shriveley when ready....they are not diff colors for diff colored flowers...I am wondering if the brown ones are from a totally diff kind of plant??
Oh, well. I guess I will just have to plant them and find out next year. But the shriveling is OK then. Thanks for all the help.
Make sure that you either scarify the coating or something so that it germinates through the hard outer shell...good luck:)
OK.
I've been wondering about Toad Lily seeds. I've been watching mine, and what looks like it would be the seed pod always falls off when it's green. Does this mean it's not been fertilized, or do I need to bag the flower and catch the green part before it falls? None of them have ever come close to hanging around and drying up. I do have bees all over them too!
kl, are your seeds long and green? Here is a picture of the seeds:

That's about what they look like, except they're brighter green and a little fleshier, guess I should just try to get some and dry inside?
sorry. I don't have any experiece with them. Good luck. May be post a new thread and someone can help you.
I just bought some tricyrtis latifolia and tricyrtis maculata seeds, and they don't look anything like that. The latifolia seeds are oval with a point at one end of the oval, are flat, brown and maybe 1/8" long. The maculata seeds are the same shape only darker and half the size.
New info: was told that tricyrtis pods are often empty - i.e. they often don't form seeds. I got seeds from only one plant - the pods were still green but starting to open, and when I turned them upside down, the seeds just spilled right out of them, so I assume that they're ready. They're pretty small - about the size of columbine seeds, only flat, and teardrop shape - a point at one end. Mine are from miyazaki, and are medium to dark brown, and were just harvested a few days ago, after the plant froze.
