Does anyone know how to germinate anthurium seed? I have bright red seeds dropping off my plant and I would like to plant some and maybe share some if there is interest.
Anthurium Seeds
Hi zonezen'The most satisfactory way to
propagate these plants is by means of offsets.
Use a sharp knife for detaching and offset
from the base of its parent when it is between
4 and 6 inches long(3-4inches for A.nanus).
Plant it in a 3inch pot containing an equal-
parts mixture of moistened peat moss and coarse
sand or perlite. Enclose the whole in a plastic
bag. Place in a warm, slightly shaded position.
A bright window where the sunlight is filtered
through a blind or curtain. The offset should
root in 8 weeks and is unlikely to need any water
during that period.
Alternative propagation: divide overcrowded
clumps early in spring.
zonezen:
The berries will typically contain one or two seeds, depending on the species and health of the plant. Berries are ripe when they acheive their proper color and size. You will be sure they are ready when they literally 'pop out' of the spadix. Some species berries 'pop out' all at once and some 'pop out' over a period of several days as they ripen in succession. These berries with their seeds are ready. The seeds can easily be squezed out of the berry between your fingers. The seed should be sown immediatly as it dessicates easily and is not viable for very long. Storage of seed is of little value.
Seed often has a small green radicle already emerging at the time of seed harvest. Germination takes from 1-3 weeks in most cases, but may take longer in some species. Give seedlings a well drained soilless mix and be careful of fungal and bacterial attacks and your seedlings will be well on their way.
sounds like me, lol
Thank you Lilith and Sis for your help. I have noticed the seeds ripen a couple at a time. So I'll try my hand at trying to germinate a couple.....just to see what happens!
You mentioned that would you like to share some.. would you like to trade? here's my list: http://www.angelfire.com/grrl/lilith
Lilith,
I would be glad to share some. How long are the seeds viable?
i think if you kept the seed in some moist tissue it should not dry out too much and may be viable. i have been looking for some info about viability but couldn't. would you be willing to send some like this?
