CLOSED: Respect this bug!

Hillsboro, OH(Zone 6a)

There have been a few posts on here about Assassin bugs and wheel bugs. I started one of the threads when one bit me-quite painful too! On another thread, I mentioned I had never seen one with a "wheel". Now I have! Argument was that these are good bugs (unless one bites you LOL).

Anyway, I'd be happy to add this one to the Bug Files if a photo is needed and I can get a correct ID.

For the record, I resisted the urge to smash it and instead I took pictures and put it on a tree. I hope I do not see it again!

This definitely is a wheel bug (Arilus cristatus) - see http://creatures.ifas.ufl.edu/trees/wheel_bug.htm for detailed information.

Looks like there are plenty of great pictures in the Bug Files already. I'll have to find a different bug. ;)

I see other assassin bugs around here, but never this one. Maybe they'll show up in a box of daylilies some day...

I remember I found one on a mulberry tree I thought it was a shield bug and I thought "hey i need one of these for my insect project, so I killed it pinned it then I wanted to double check that Thats what it was and and I was shocked to find out it was an assassin bug. to be honest I was sad I killed it I had held it for a while and it didn't hurt me. thats one of the insects on my do not kill list along with stick insects and the praying mantid.
