Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #15

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Hello gang. Since my time and space is limited at the moment I'm not going to go round saving a bunch of seeds that no one is interested in. So when I notice something going to seed I'll mention it here and if it sounds like something you'd like to try give a shout out and I'll make sure to bring some in. So far I've just brought in a few annuals that I know I want to keep for myself which are:

Gaillardia Razzle Dazzle (annual)
Coral Nymph Salvia
4:00s
several different Petunias
a few Canna seeds
a few different varieties of marigolds
several different zinnias

I also have:
The Green Wizard Rudbeckia
Several of the new Coneflower colors
Shasta daisys
Black Eyed Susan
a couple different Veronicas
Salvia...not sure of the name, it's the blue/purple perennial one
Butterfly Bush
Several ornamental grasses
Several ornamental peppers
Hardy Hibiscus
Sweet hibiscus (annual)
Malvia Zebrina
Purple Knock-out Salvia
Moonbeam, Baby Sun, and Autumn Blush Coreopsis

Um, I'm sure there's more, but that's what just popped into my head. As I say, if there's anything there that appeals to anyone let me know and I'll make sure to save some for you. My seed stash from last year is still so overflowing that it seems silly to keep saving seeds that no one really wants.

Speaking of Veronicas (what a terrible segue) Lea, I have this little baby growing beside a tag that say's "Lea's Veronica." I'm thinking that doesn't look like the picture in the link you sent me. Do you think it just didn't come true or do you think I mixed up my tags?

These are things I would be interested in:

Gaillardia Razzle Dazzle (annual)
Coral Nymph Salvia

Depending on varieties....

I am still trying to figure out how to get to some of my seeds...

Hello all,

I've been reading and enjoying this thread for some time and realized today that I haven't "spoken" before now. This is my first season to really invest the time and fun into a cottage garden and have been enjoying it and learning from all of you. Learning about seed collecting has been particularly interesting. Lala, as a realtive newbie to this, I am not sure I would have any seeds unusual enough that you might want to trade. Can I still ask for a few from your list? If so, I'd like a few of the hardy Hibiscus and maybe some of the new Coneflowers and the purple knockout salvia. I do have my plants on my trade list if you want to take a gander.

Also wondering what you have found to be the best way to tag your plants?

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Well we had straight line winds from the hurricane Sunday and my plants are a mess! My red shield hibiscus blew over I just hope they are alright to bloom those puppies are so big! We were out of electricity for three days so had to cook out a lot that was kind of nice three of us got together on that, the hardest part was trying to find ice with the stores being closed, I finally came up with four bags of ice just before the electricity came back on lol Trees everywhere were down and uprooted and the schools have been closed all week, they declared us a natural disaster. We were suppose to get rain Sunday night but got the winds instead and no rain in the forecast for the next week but it‘s going to be beautiful out :) I’ve been picking up the yard all week and helping the neighbors out. I didn’t have it so bad here but a lot of the neighbors had trees on their houses! I may have lost more shade in the shade garden a big old limb fell out of the tree down there :( My castor bean plants are history now too and I haven’t had one mole this year so I will be growing those again this year, it was soo nice not to be stepping on the mole hills all summer and not to have them in my beds! I didn’t save any seeds from them though I was too worried about the kittens with them but I still have some seeds from last year.

Seandor , your indigo will be fine and that is normal :) I have some that reseeded from last year and they are the same height, next year they will get taller. They probably won’t bloom until 2010. 2010 OMG! LOL

Those little weevils are starting to come out of my hibiscus seeds already! I was cleaning seeds last night and had all kinds of them in my box, I just wonder how many I have in the house I had the box sitting on the shelves to make sure they were dry LOL

I’m going to have pots to over winter too and really didn’t want to for this year, it’s like eating my eyes are bigger than my stomach lol I’m just running out of space to put all of these plants and I made big beds for this year!

If anyone has:
Yellow petunias
Coral Nymph
Anything red in annuals except for the tall salvias. I’m trying to save seeds from my bicolor red and white ones but it’s hard and I have one purple and white salvia that’s an annual but I haven’t gotten any seeds from it :( These annuals should be easier to save seeds from LOL

I’ll have more sea holly seeds like I had last year for the ones that couldn’t get them to germinate for this year, just remind me and I’ll send you several so you can start them different ways :)

Tcs, those Gaillardias have those fine sticky hairs that get into your fingers, I have them in my fingers right now LOL I’ll save you more sea holly seeds, it’s hard to believe they didn’t germinate I have them everywhere from reseeding lol

On the bronze fennel when they turn brown and have those white lines in them then they are ready to be harvested, mine are still yellow right now.

My candy lily seeds are starting to burst open now and it‘s so hard to keep the kittens off of them! That is one of their favorite plants to play in LOL

Wind, does that small blue MG have ivy leaves on it? I had one like that I grew a few years ago and I’m still pulling a bunch of seedlings out from it, very invasive! I have some in between some tricolor grass that I can’t get too that is blooming so I will have more seedlings from that one in there again lol

La, I haven’t grown the veronica that I have from my seeds but I would think veronica would come true maybe someone else on here will speak up or ask Tuink when she gets back from vacation maybe she will know, I only had the one veronica when I collected seeds last year, I’m trying to collect seeds off of a pink and white one that is new this year but the flowers aren’t cooperating so far lol La, in the picture they show little blue lines in the flower of that veronica and that was what I was looking forward to when I first grew it but you can't see them! That darn flower is too small lol These catalogs are so missleading!

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Wow, Lea. hard to imagine a hurricane way up there where you are. Sorry you had to be without electricity, isn't that the pits? How did your dad do, is he ok?

I didn't have any sea hollies come up either, I must have done something wrong. I might still have a few seeds left, I dunno. I've decided not to get anymore seeds till next year, cause I still have plenty to plant, but if I see anything that you guys don't have, I will save seeds and send them to the swap.

Well, lots to do today, better get started.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Lea, I feel your pain of bringing stuff indoors! I may have to haull a bunch of stuff in tonight! They said on the radio we could have a frost tonight and to cover tenders. I want to try overwintering a Mandevilla and I think I may have to go dig it up and bring it in this evening. I am so sad because it is just starting to reach the top of the trellis and it's covered in flowers and absolutely beautiful right now! Why couldn't this frost have waited !? It is early for one and the rest of the week it's supposed to be in the fifties at night. Do you think I could just cover it? Could I use some plastic table cloths from the dollar store? I really don't have anything else I could use and I thought I could just go buy some of those in a little while.
Also I got a few seeds off the tall skullcap, I will try to get more becaue the ones I got were by accident. I broke a piece off with a hose and didn't notice until the other day, so I put it on a paper towel and some seeds fell out.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

How did I forget to get in there, that those straight line winds are awful! I am sooo sorry that happened. It happened in NH recently, not here but up in the lakes region. Some people lost their lives one being a grandmother whose body they found shielding her baby grandson who survived! Then a week later on the news they were talking about how that same baby had a nother brush with death in a car accident, someone must be watching out for that little one!

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

That is one lucky baby!! I use sheets when I need to cover stuff forthe first light forst..

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

That lil baby is really lucky. : )

Meredith, I think I would just put something over it, also. As long as it's not gonna freeze, you should be ok.
~Lucy

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

No problem nb. Assuming there's going to be a swap this year, just give a hollar and I'll tag some seeds for you. If for some reason we don't have an organized swap just shoot me a Dmail and send them to you directly.

Wow Lea, what an adventure. I'm glad you're up and running again and hopefully the damage was minimal. We had 60 mph winds on Sunday too, but only minor damage. I've been swearing under my breath at the neigbor kids (big party house) for swiping a sign out of my yard and knocking over the fence (and snapping off my sunflowers.) Although I'm 99% sure they are the culprits I keep telling myself to chill out that it MIGHT have been the wind.

Meredith I'm not going to tell you how much stuff I'm going to attempt to overwinter this year, but a good starting point is the 150 different coleus cultivers....and it only escalates from there. That's one of the biggest reasons my seed starting will be so greatly reduced this year. Extreme lack of space.

I'm pretty sure I winter-sowed my sea hollies and they did beautifully. I'm too lazy to look it up right now but I'll double check my spreadsheet later to be sure.

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks lala!

Brownstown, IN(Zone 5b)

Lea it's hard to believe we had a hurricane in Indiana isn't it. Sorry about your damage. This time our damage was miminal but a lot of the local farmers have their corn crop lying flat on the ground. That is nothing compared to the loss of life though. A man from the town where my church is was at a family reunion at Versailles State Park watching his granddaughters swing and a limb fell on him a killed him.
We spent all day Monday cleaning up and sawing up tree limbs. Now I am afraid for hunters to go into the woods this fall for fear of tree limbs that are just laying up in the trees. My sis just got her power on last night and my b from Sellersb urg is still without power.
La I think I will want some of your seed and will send you a D mail later.
Does anyone know if the cactus flowered zinnia will continue to come true. I got some in a round robin that I participated in and had 3 plants and want to save rhe seed. I don't care about what color only the cactus looking flower.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Indy, I think the ZInnia may cross if you have other types nearby. You will probably still end up with some cactus ones too. I know I kept track of which color Zinnia I got seeds from and some of them ended up being the same color as the parents but some were colors and shapes I hadn't been interested in saving. So I am just guessing the same can happen with cactus crossing with other types.

Brownstown, IN(Zone 5b)

The flowers looked pretty good so are you suggesting these seed may be unlike the flowers on this year's plants. If that is the case I will want to buy some cactus flowering seed as I just love them.

(Maggie) Jacksonvill, FL(Zone 9a)

Lala,

I would love somehe Green Wizard Rudbeckia
Coneflower colors
Shasta daisys
Malvia Zebrina
Purple Knock-out Salvia
Moonbeam, Baby Sun, Coreopsis

I also need some more bronze fennel. I want to plant a field of it. the caterpillars LOVED it and I got no seeds because they ate it ALL.

Ooh Ooh Ooh I would love any of the porterweeds! : ) Especially the blue, after hearing Melanie on the butterfly forum rave all summer. : )

Springfield, MA(Zone 6a)

thanks for the reassurance, LeBug - I will be planting perennials this weekend - not sure that the neighbours will understand me ripping out all the annuals!

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

L_J ,,,, I did pop you a Dmail regarding seeds.... when i get home next week, i'll work up a list of seeds that I may have to swap. i guess, if anyone wants/needs the seeds... i will collect them.

Any news on if Suzy - the Seed Queen is willing to do the swap again this year?

Terese

Greenville, IN(Zone 6a)

Oh Seandor we all hate to see our annuals go for sure! I have some of the taller red salvias that reseeded that are just starting to bloom, I wish they wouldn't take so long to reseed! I hope to get seeds out of them before they bite the dust I can't get rid of them :)

I have cleaning up to do in my beds and still cleaning up from the wind storm, still plants to get into the ground, plants to be transplanted to over witner and painting to do on the outside of the house I know I won't get to the garages to paint this year lol The first day of Au tumn is close and I'm starting to freak LOL

margaran, would you save some of that dwarf red porterweed for me that would go nice with my blue mist shrubs, I have two I need to transplant next spring out of my nectar garden, I've never transplanted those before after they have been growing in the ground I just hope they will transplant well but those colors will be beautiful together :) How do you start the seeds to them? Under lights?

That's awful about that man being killed Veronica! A lady in Lanesville was under a tree and it toppled over on a building if that building hadn't been there she would have been killed she was very lucky but she is still in the hospital. So far I haven 't heard of anyone getting killed, I was out under the trees during a lot of that and didn't have a clue what was going on, I was just moving plants in pots so they wouldn't blow over knew something was up the winds were a lot different than usual, now it scares me to think I was under those trees! I have a lot of branches down we were lucky but I still have a lot of branches in the tops of the trees so I know where you are coming from when you worry about the people in the woods, I'm glad you didn't have a lot of damage too! I didn't think I had a lot of debree (sp?) in my plants out by the road but I cleaned them out last night and have two wheel barrows full LOL I need to go get that out of the road today and put it down by the cedar tree it 's too dry to burn anything right now so I'll just have a mess down there until I can. I have about five wheel barrows full of sticks from the field and still have all kinds of hickory nuts to pick up in the field so I can walk up there it's like walking on marbles LOL I heard that Sellersburg was still without electricity, some places here are too, one side of the highway has electricity and the other doesn't. Thank goodness we are on a side that does have it :)

La, I think our winds were 100 mph, straight line winds, so weird! I staked my sunflowers because I thought we were going to have a storm Sunday nite with 'rain' lol No rain :( But the wind broke my sunflowers off from where I had them tied at and I had my elephant ears tied with a couple of sheets but they are fine except for some of the leaves being torn a little.

Ok, I have lucy and La down for more sea holly anyone else? :) We won't need a swap we are doing just fine lol I have some cool rudbeckias that I need to get the names off of, they didn't turn out like the pictures but they are pretty plants, haven't gotten any seeds off of them yet so don't want to offer them until I do :) I got the glorosia daisy one and none of those were full like they were suppose to be I was so dissapointed :( I think I'll get those from Burpee the next time seems like I have better results with their seeds with rudbeckias.

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Very good! I just started a word document and will make sure I save enough seed at least for those of you expressing interest. (I'm sure there'll be a little extra in case anyone else chimes in after the fact.)

Maggie, would the Forest Fire Sage work in containers? (Whoever had the Lady in Red, I would love to try some of that. I think someone commented that it was just like the Coral Nymph and I really liked that this year.)

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Lea, you don't have to save any sea holly seeds for me. I'm not gonna be able to participate in the piggie trade this fall/winter. I am soooo far behind on everything here. Lots of things that I need to do, and I may never catch up. Plus, I'll have my first Grandbaby coming next month, and I'm sure I will have him to take care of, while momma and daddy works.

Thanks for thinking about me, tho. You are a sweetheart. : )

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Ooops Lea we cross-posted. You mis-read (or I didn't explain myself very well which is probably the case.) My sea holly did great! I winter-sowed it and it it's looking wonderful.

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

If I can get the LAdy in Red seeds B4 they drop I will have plenty...

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

As an after thought I will add there will be God's plenty (as always...it's beautiful but a vicious reseeder) of the purple amaranth and it looks like I'll have plenty of castor bean seeds as well. I also have scarlet milkweed if anyone wants any of that. I didn't mention the cleome or the regular blanket flower in my original post as it seems that everybody and their brother already has those.

Critter (or anyone) can you offer any advice on saving seed from the wishbone flower? I confess that I haven't really searched, but at a glance I don't see any seed forming.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Torenia (wishbone flower) seeds are really teeny and very pale in color, like fine round grains of sand... if you look inside the dried "dead" flowers (near the base of the bloom), you should be able to find them.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I might need scarlet milkweed, I started mine too late because of all the seeds from the swap and the Monarchs gobbled up any chance of me getting seeds! : )

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Ha ha-I did a thread on the seed saving forum and someone posted pics and all-BRB

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Here ya go

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/885799/

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I, too - will have TONS of Scarlet Milkweed seeds, if anyone wants them.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

I have to go work for a little while, but since it's friday, I'm going to be able to get on the computer for more than 5 minutes at a time. So I'll put together a list of what I have and will potentially have, and post it later. I figure if I'm going to be oinkin at seeds -I need to have my offers on the table as well. So as not to appear tooo piggy like ; )

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Ooooh most excelent Ms. fairy, TYVM. It looks like there's quite a bit of reading there so I'll finish my mowing and browse through that as my reward when I'm finished.

Edited to thank Critter for her timely information. I got so excited about pictures that I became a little too hasty with my response. LOL.

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

Welcome La:)

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I posted an image last year in the Butterfly forum.... that's what they were ID'd as.

Forest Fire is growing in a pot. Look for D-mail confirmations.
I do like the idea of a "Central Clearing House- rather than individual mailings"- I think it cut down on postage- and also added surprises.
