Cottage Garden Seed Swap & Chat #15

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Gemini those are pretty!

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

What a neat idea to plant those together with morning glories -- especially blue or purple ones! Hmm, I didn't grow any of those this year, but I may dig a few seeds out of my stash to start next spring... :-)

Brownstown, IN(Zone 5b)

Is anyone as dry as I am here in Indiana? Everything is pretty pathetic. I am trying to keep a few things alive so when it does rain maybe I will have a few plants still blooming. I am about to chuck it all and start planning for next year. Well actually I am sort of doing it already.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Indy, we are in a drought here and things are really dry...our black walnut tree is starting to show distress now with lower limbs dying back. This year we lost two hydrangeas and a nice established bee balm patch from last seasons dryness.

South Carolina shows drought as well. Check out: http://www.hiltonpond.org/ThisWeek080801.html

I noticed my Coral Honeysuckle is starting to change to it's fall colors already. I think it is also because of lack of rain.

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

Same here, only 2/10" of rain since sometime in July. A group of trees in the back yard are all browning and losing leaves so much it looks like fall out there. Most of August was strangely cool and mild here, so at least the watering I've had to do has been more effective, not all evaporating in the heat.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

well, would you believe I transplanted more of the swap plants today :)

These are all pretty hardy because they have been hanging out in cups and milk jugs all this time:

I did Japanese orange iris, calendula citrus cocktail (weez), Sedum spurium Stonecrop ‘Dragon’s Blood” (weez), Eyeball plant spilanthes oleracea (planted it with yellow lisianthus), cheddar pinks and chianti dianthus.

This is a bloom of Tithonia rotundifolia, mexican sunflower, from margaran

Dry, dry dry, dry here too. In fact my outside water faucet has been broken all summer and I've just been toting water to the containers. When it got so dry that even the non-container plants were threatening to give up the ghost I finally got some one to fix it for me. I've turned it off a total of 4 hours since Thursday. Yes, I've even been watering during the middle of the day and they are thanking me for every drop of it.

I love the MGs going up the stalk. I attempted something like that with nasties and sunflowers, but the nasties didn't come up. :-(

Say, I acquired several of the new coneflower varieties this year. My guess is that they won't come true, but if anyone wants to try them I'll be happy to save some seed.

Dear Piggies,

Can we invite this person in? http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/894444/ She doesn't have anything to trade right now but probably that doesn't matter to us. I'm sending her some seed from the swap that I couldn't plant this summer d/t heat. I think it woulds be nice if she had the opportunity to req stuff she'd actually like and will do better in her zone.
Has anyone heard from Suzy? Are she and Mr. Clean OK?

Maggie

's-Gravenhage, Netherlands(Zone 8b)

Fine with me!

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Diddo : ) I was going to send her at least a small amount of all the seeds I harvest anyway : ) So it would be better for her to pick what she will actually use/ want. : )

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

FIne with me-I just posted that she can anytihg she wants that I have...

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Oh me too! I have more seeds than I can ever hope to use..... which I'm sure won't stop me from getting more.

I love my Piggy friends;-) Did you know DG was on NPR some time back? Someone had to move (?lost their home) and the local TX DG people came in stages to clear out all their plants and move them to the new place so the people wouldn't have to lose their garden too. I love DG, you guys ROCK!!!!!!!.

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

I think who ever hosts the upcoming swap(s) will gladly help out friends without anything to trade. Suzy had no problem and did that last time :)

I transplanted some yellow calendula this morning and a few oakhurst eucomis. Just when I think I'm getting to the end of the plants, I go and divide and transplant! They keep multiplying :0

I'm thinking about making a shelf with a few cinder blocks at each end just to get the pots up off the ground.

I already asked, but didn't hear from anyone.....any ideas on how to harvest purple majesty millet seeds?

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Fine with me. Just more little piglets to help get rid of some seed. LOL

Getting really worried about Suzy. If anybody has any info would sure appreciate it. Send me a dmail if ya dont wanna post. Here to help if she needs some.

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Star I've been getting a little concerned too. I just figured she was too busy in her own garden to worry about ours, but it's been a loooong time since we've heard a peep from her.

Wind, calendula aren't perennial for you are they? In a few weeks mine will be gone to the frost. :(

Re: the millet. Critter replied below your post, "Yes, those round things in the tassel part of PMaj are the seeds -- they look just like the millet seeds in birdseed mix. I think the biggest ones generally do best, so I tend to sort out a few fat ones if I'm planning to start plants inside... if I'm direct sowing or winter sowing with a bunch of seeds, I just sprinkle them generously."

When I harvested some seed last year I just applied some pressure with my thumb and they came off with no problem.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Thank you for asking about the purple majesty Wind. Lala do you know how to tell when they are ready though? I went to check mine again and found the little rounds things but they are reddish. Do you think they are ready?

Winchester, KY(Zone 6a)

I just checked Suzy's member page and it looks like she no longer has a subscription. I sure hope she renews her membership soon!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Sheeesh....sorry I missed Critter's reply about the millet, I'll look back for it!

Thanks lala

...as for the calendula, I didn't even look up and reread the plant files info on it. I was hoping it was a perennial, drats. I guess mine will dye then, because they are still pretty small.

New Braunfels, TX(Zone 8b)

Hi everybody,
Been reading through this thread and y'all are all a hoot! I am new to all this seed collecting stuff, trying my hand at getting the seeds from obedient plant. I've been able to sift it down to just the seeds and fine chaf, but not sure how to go any further. Any suggestions? I'm working on collecting some other seeds as well and would love to be in your piggy swap if possible. I am relatively new to DG and don't really understand how swaps work, yet.

Southeastern, NH(Zone 5b)

Oh Man! All this talk about a new swap and no Suzy to be found! I hate to say it but it's seeming like we may need to crown a new Queen of the Piggies. But Who? could carry on the flame of our (as Dryad would say) illustrious Illoqiun!? We are already planning a swap for her to have and she's not even here ROTFL : )

Welcome nbgard! I'm sure you can get in on the future swap. I think none of us are sure exactly what is happening yet. : )

edited because I can't spell illustrious and because I had a memory fart : )

Hey y'all I'm looking for someone to split some rudbeckia seeds with me and started a thread for it on the coneflower forum. I don't think there's much traffic over there so I thought I'd ask if any of you want in before I take this to the seed trading forum. I'm only looking for a few folks so if you're interested here's the thread:

http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/898654/

I'll also enclose a pic of the ones I want to get.

I already have autumn colors, but would be interested in the others:)

(bestest fairy)Tempe, MI(Zone 5b)

I can send you some autumn colors if you want:)

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Well Fooey Stac, I've already got one signed up for the split so I guess I'll have to leave it as is. Guess I should have asked first.

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Fairy you have mail. :)

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Well fudge, wish I would have seen that would have gone a split with ya. I getting more Rudebeckia seeds. Will check out the site and see all what they have and I want bunches so wil have extras for the piggy swap if anybody wants some. Will let ya know what ones I order. Boy them sure our pretty!

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

Meredith and all, you'll never guess.....starlight and I were going to try and dmail dryad57 and ask her if she knows or can find out what happened to Suzy and if she was ok, and low and behold Robin isn't on anymore either (or at least I don't think so). It looks like at the moment it will remain an unsolved mystery.

I'm going to drop a note in the mail to her and see what happens. Maybe she will log on in the meantime. [sigh]

We can always watch the seed exchange. I'm sure there will be some fun ones coming up to join in this fall-winter.

North West, OH(Zone 5b)

Star you can still get in on the split if you want. I'd still like to get 2 or even 3 more peeps.

Boy I sure hope we haven't lost Suzy and Robin. :-(

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

I just Dmailed Suzy... If I hear from her, I'll post! I told her I'd be honored to renew her sub, but I didn't want to just jump in and do it in case she'd decided to take a break for some reason (wanted to respect that if so).

South/Central, FL(Zone 9a)

Good Crit, I was hoping someone was trying to get hold of her. So, D-mail still works even tho you don't have a subscription? I didn't know that.
~Lucy

Mount Laurel, NJ(Zone 7a)

also, Starlight just told me Dryad is still a member....I just couldn't seem to dmail her for some reason.

Sorry Dryad, if you're out there...we miss you and Suzy :)

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Yes, you can do Dmail with both members & subscribers.

There was some trouble earlier today with accessing member pages and other crazy stuff, but I think Dave has it under control now, wind.

Seale, AL(Zone 8b)

Lala Jane. Yes please. Just let me know how much money to send and dm with paypal if you have it. If there other kinds ya want to of them get them and I wil pay for them and you cna take some out and help yourself.

I looked ot see if I had could find Suzy numebr too, and didn't have any luck. Lot sof folks have had problems with jobs and such and i too would gladly pay for a memebership for her. Sometimes thinsg happen we don't expect and that what helping hands are for.

Gtta run back tonight.

(Maggie) Jacksonvill, FL(Zone 9a)

Piggies,

I sent Dryad a message the other day- haven't heard back yet. I googled Suzy and found an AOL.COm addy and her phone number. I sent an email to that address and will try calling her later if I don't get a response. Some people don't check e-mail often.

Maggie

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Maggie, please let us know what you find out... and tell her I'd love to treat her to a membership renewal. (I know I'm not alone in that... but I just submitted an article on planting daffodils, and I could just dedicate the payment from it to her subscription... that seems fitting, given the advice she's given me!)

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

I also have Suzi's email. Just found Robin's too.

**edited to add that i found Dryad's addy

Message from Suzy-

LOL! OMG! I am so sorry! ......there is absolutely nothing wrong, I swear! I am fine, Tom is fine, the girls are fine, my mother is driving me crazy (par for the course, it just means she is fine, too) Money is fine, but please thank Critter. :)

My email is actually on DG - there is a thread for how to check up on people if they just disappear, ahem, and I added mine to the list.
Tell everybody I am alive and well and miss them, and I'll be back on later.

Love,
Suzy

Anyone know what thread she's talking about?

Maggie

Leesburg, FL(Zone 9b)

well, i've just attempted an extensive 'search' and came up empty.
I searched ALL forums, using Suzy's userID, various terms, and nothing.

but glad to hear all is well.
