Red Rosie, the Rescued Chicken

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Wow, a tufted frizzle I think!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

OMG!!! Red Rosie laid an egg!!! I have now had her for 9 days and no sign of eggs, not that it mattered - that isn't why I rescued her. But today, I went out to give her the cottage cheese blend that she loves, and there was an empty broken shell in her cage. She must have laid it and broke it and eaten it, but holy cow! I never expected her to start laying. She must be feeling better...

Yay Rosie!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

wow that is awesome. She loves her new home for sure.

Claire... we need new pics of Red Rosie!!!!

Red Rosie ,Red Rosie, send chicken fairy right over LOL
yes more pics please

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I had a couple of great Red Rosie experiences today.

#1. Rosie does what I am calling the "football shuffle" sometimes. When I leave her out on the back porch, she just wanders around on the porch. She doesn't go off into the grass much. If I come out of the back door onto the porch, she drums her feet really quickly, like a football shuffle move. I don't know why she does this. She also does it on the grass sometimes when I am with her, but you can't hear it as distinctly as when she does it on the porch. Just sounds like a little drummer. She looks down at her feet when she does it. Does anyone else have a chicken that does this, and why do they do it?

#2. I went out into the veg garden to dig some potatoes. I carried her with me and put her down where I was digging. She kept scratching as I dug. When I would get some potatoes and put them in the bucket, she would look in the bucket and then keep scratching. Then I went over to look at the zucchini. She didn't want to be alone at the potato rows I guess, because she made a bee-line after me whenever I moved in there. She just stayed right with me. Then I went to leave the veg garden and I said "Come on Rosie, let's go" and she followed me out and back to the porch. I thought that was awfully cute and kind of funny. I haven't had her that long so I am surprised that she would do that.

I will take more pics tomorrow if I remember.
Right now I have a pipped egg....

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

PIPPED?

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

YES!!! I have a pip and a very noisy chick inside an egg!

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

Awwwwwwwwwww Claire!!! You are now officially a Rosie Mommie!!!

I think she is doing a jig to tell you she is happy to see you!!! You have a new *pup* to follow you now...How absolutely wonderful!!!

She was looking in the bucket to see if you, silly human that you are, may have perhaps missed a bug delicacy that she might want...LOL
You dig, she will scratch to help you...I do hope I get a lovely lil hen to be my yard pal too...you are truly blessed!! Better start thinking of Pet Quarters for her for the winter... she is NOT going to be happy away from you ...;-))

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

Congrats on the Pipper!!! Get the camera!!!!

Hmmmmmm... Wonder if Rosie would like some babies to Mother???

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

OK it's a very bad pic because I took it really fast so that I didn't drop the humidity much (but it goes up again super fast in the RCom20) and the pip is right about in the centre of the picture on the top part of the brown egg. The chick is peeping quite a lot and I can hear it tapping too.

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

I SEE IT!!!! How Eggciting!!!!! I WAS going to bed, but now I have to wait to see this one!! LOL

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

But it will take hours and hours, right?

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

If SHE (Thinking Pullet here) is that loud and vociferous, maybe not....could only be a couple if she is really strong and determined...You KNOW you are not going to be able to sleep with that baby coming... LOL

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Here is a better picture, through the lid, pip is slightly left on brown egg in picture.

Don't worry if "she" stops and goes quiet for a while--they sometimes need to rest for a while, even hours and then suddenly pop out. Of course, some just pop out without resting. You are about to learn what real addiction is.

Sugar Valley, GA(Zone 7b)

She sure is Cat!! I feel like a new Great Granny again!! I can't wait to see this lil GAL....WHOOOOOOOHOOOOOOO!!!
