Might need some vigilance on posts asking for ID

(Zone 7a)

One of the things that makes this forum so useful is its level of maintaining accuracy in the classification and naming of MG species and cultivars. Some day, given this forum's high standards, perhaps this might lead to the creation of an international standard for identification - something that already exists for other flowers.

I realize that this may not been the original intent behind the creation of this forum, but if this should be a by-product from the simple joy of growing these fascinating and lovely flowers, what harm would be done? Certainly, we have all benefited educationally from the ride, whether it meets this destination or not.

DG admin does an unbelievably excellent job in managing all these forums, and with the best of intentions, inadvertently moved a thread ( http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/795866/#post_4276854 ) out of this forum to the Plant and Tree Identification ID forum for threads asking for an ID that had not been resolved. When I dmailed them about this, they immediately moved it back, which I very much appreciated.

This is just to keep folks alert - keep an eye on threads and posts you've added to your favorites or tagged - especially if the heading had language asking for an ID.

We are very lucky to have staff who are so helpful in fixing things - not to mention implementing so many great ideas overall on this website.

Folks, I need to ask anyone reading this not to post any further to this thread - and also not to dmail admin about this.

I just meant this as a caution so that we can keep relevant posts on this forum, given the nature of the MG forum. If anyone sees a thread that has similarly been moved, then admin welcomes your notifying them. However, other types of dmails about this could overwhelm their workload, and none of this want that.

So, let's just use this thread for keeping ourselves advised, but not to to pelt admin with oodles of dmails - especially since we are all on the same page anyway.

Above all, I hope we continue to show our appreciation for all that DG admin does.

Thanks, Karen!

A few threads that had ID in the title - even though the thread itself didn't contain an ID request - may have been caught in a "dragnet" sweep of scattered ID threads. If you find that has happened, please let us know.

If yours was truly an ID thread and it's now in the ID forum, the good news is, it's where it should be, and you can now mark it resolved, since that forum contains a unique feature for "closing" resolved threads.

This is to add some clarification and summarization regarding ID threads for understanding. The following is paraphrased/quoted, and remarks in parentheses are mine.

-- If someone has a thread tagged or marked in their favorites, then the move to a different forum won't affect that at all. (I found this to be true, because when I clicked on the thread in question in my favorites, it came right up - just with a different forum heading, which admin kindly addressed immediately).

---------------------------

-- If anyone should find any of their threads that were NOT an actual ID request have been moved, admin would really appreciate folks letting them know. But ID threads - generally speaking - have been moved to a forum where they can now be marked closed if they are/were resolved.

(Let me point out that admin understands that what we learn during the process of identification is as important as the identification itself. So, if I understand admin correctly, they are going to put a sticky at the top of forums to the Plant and Tree Identification forum in which they list ID links from respective forums to the PTI forum. I like this compromise, because a) we don't lose any threads or information and b) the DG website is enriched when folks visiting the PTI forum discover forums they might otherwise not think to visit. I'd love to see this sticky entitled "Mything Links".)

-------------------------------

-- "All true ID threads really do belong in their own forum, where there's a cross-roads of all members to take a look and help (or learn something new, as the case may be ;o) And by giving all members (subscribers or not) an opportunity to get and give ID help, it has helped draw new members deeper into the other areas of DG, including the specific plant forums - most of which are subscribers-only."

-------------------------------------

(Personally, I think - that even though, at first, these changes might appear unwelcome - that future interaction between the PTI and MG forums will greatly enrich both the MG forum and the DG website overall.)
