Ours for 70 years

Having been given a basket from my neighbor whom had it for some 70 years I started thinking "will I have something for that long". I quickly decided the answer would be yes. I'm 56; my teddy bear is already 52 and having it another 20 years is a certainty. I also have a braclet that I seemed to have had all my life; but probably have had it since I was maybe 8.
What will you have for 70+ years?

Still have my goy-goy- aka my baby blanket. Best story is that when I was in the hospital at about five yrs old, it got into the hosp laundry and Dad snuck into the linen closet and rescued it.
A few figurines that came from an aunt. (skunk and a pair of lambs) A tiny bottle of perfume I had when I was little. A figurine of girl in a full skirt that was on my birthday cake one year- we did not go in much for fancy touches like that so it was the only one ever. Some baby teeth probably still rattling around in the jewelry box. Baby shoes. Tiny sweater and dress.

There's just something about some items you've had forever...

I'll have my grandmothers fine china probably. I don't know how long she had it before she passed away at 83 years old, but if God willing I'll have it when I'm 70.

I have a dresser and cedar chest given to me by my grandmother in the mid-60s. They were probably a gift to her from my grandfather around 1940-something. The cedar chest is very plain but the dresser is beautiful. It has wicker down the sides and a black mable inlay top you can remove. I'll never give those to anyone! LOL

I'm 55 years old. I have the first gift ever sent to me, when I was born! It is a Japanese lacquer bowl with a lid, red on the inside and black on the outside with a design of a shrimp or a crawfish. Very special to me. May not be any older than I am. I don't know. I also have my grandparents' wedding rings. Those are over 70 years old. They just sit in a safe deposit box, though.

Being securely past that age, what have "I" had all this time ? Made me think. A stamp collection my Uncle started for me when I was very young; a book of poetry by E A Poe from another Uncle who died before I was born. Other than those there are several inherited items, like the porcelain 'setting hen' my great grandmother served the breakfast boiled eggs in, and so forth. At this time in my life it seems to be more important to consider what will happen to these treasured objects. Will they mean anything to our son ? or the granddaughters who have never known anyone past my generation ? Many of us place a great value on family memorabilia, but sadly not everyone. I think the gift of that basket and your regard for it shows a great inner conscience and caring nature. Good for you.

I have many treasured possessions including some of my baby clothes & the basket I slept in when my parents were finally able to take me home - I was a preemie. I have treasured items (mostly glassware) from my grandmother, my parents & my in-laws. Will my son love these items like I do? Probably not. But I have made a book for him with pictures of each treasured item and the story behind it - who it originally belonged to and any history that I know about the item. When I'm gone he will know why I have kept these items and who might like to have them if he does not want to keep them.

The book is such a good idea! Some of the things I have from my parents and grands need to be explained, as to what they are. that might make them more meaningful to the young-'uns.

I also love the book idea. Great minds out there!

Well, I know how bad my memory is sometimes & I grew up with this stuff. I did pictures of each item with a description, who I acquired it from, and any history that I know about it. Also included name & address of at least one relative on each side of the family to contact before he sells any of the treasures. And whether anyone had specifically asked for a particular item when I no longer want it. I figure it will save headaches for everybody someday. It's also a good way to keep track of valuables in case of theft.
