PNWLS sale

Lincoln, NE(Zone 5b)

I joined PNWLS for the first time this year and am wondering about the fall PNWLS sale. Do all members get sent an email or letter about the sale and what is available? What are the prices like and how many cultivers are normally offered?

Thanks,
Susan

After many years there has been a changing of the guard, so to speak, of the chairmanship of the bulb sale. So it is hard to say what to expect, except there will be some changes that should enhance the sale. Additional vendors are being sought.

In the past, a little pamphlet containing the list, short descriptions and prices is sent out to all members. This happens around the end of September. Orders are due by mid October.

Prices are less than what you would pay retail from the vendor because the society buys in wholesale lots, then marks them up a little. I counted 66 offerings in last falls sale; Asiatics, Orientals, trumpets. Typically, Maks bulbs are sold 3 to a bag and the Lily Garden bulbs are sold as singles. There should be at least one additional vendor to make up for the loss of Ed McRae's bulbs.

Thanks for the information pardalinum. I wondering now if I should store the bulbs in the refrigerator over windter since it will be so late when they arrive. Or maybe I'd be better off waiting until the Spring Sale. Is it usually about the same assortment?

There usually is a pretty quick turn around from order to delivery too. It seems like I have them here to plant by the first week of November. I haven't had any trouble planting then, but if you are concerned, you can always dig your holes, keep your dirt in a garage or something (a warmer temp.) and place the bulbs when they arrive, cover with the warmer dirt and water them in nicely. It works out great.

But if you are more patient and less excited than I am about these bulb sales, you most certainly can wait until spring too.

The selections are similar but not exactly the same. Some are dropped and others added. Bulbs are usually shipped prior to the fall meeting which is the 4th Saturday in October.

Lilies can be planted anytime you can work the soil. Even here in Maine I can plant in November. So if you can dig the hole, you are all set!
