Thought this would be fun! Do you remember what your favorite candy was when you were a kid?
My grandma used to make homemade cinnamon rock candy. It was so good, and made the house smell wonderful. I will always remember that.
How about you?
What was (is) your favorite candy?
Mine is Katydids- I don't know why, but I could eat them all day!! We used to sell them at school for fundraisers, and I would buy a couple of tins just for myself. Yum, yum!

Even as a child I was a chocoholic! Still haven't changed (except my pants size) Homemade chocolate fudge w/walnuts. Mom used to make it from Thanksgiving through the new year. Now I make it so she doesn't have to. (I make it more often). My 3 year old son's favorite candy is Warheads, they are very very sour!!! (OK so he likes to eat lemon slices too) As for me - as long as it is chocolate it's for me! Julie
Dignbloom, You are singing to the choir here!
Nepthys, I guess my favorite is hmmm... Turtles, no, frozen Reese's Cups, no, Hershey Bar w/Almonds, no, See's Candies, no... What a hard question to answer when you can only pick one! I guess whatever kind of chocolates are in that heartshaped box tonight will be my favorite ... for right now. :o)
When I was a kid there was a candy that was something like a communion waffer that had little candies inside. If you shook it you could hear/feel the little candies shaking inside.
Anybody know this candy? I am beginning to think that maybe I made up a candy memory that never was!! Nobody knows what I am talking about when I ask.
Chocolate, chocolate and more chocolate for this gal! I just can't get enough of the stuff. I am like dignbloom, always was and always be a chocolate lover! Mom's homemade fudge is my favorite, with pecans! mmmmmm Lisa (hey, how did all these chocolate stains get on the keyboard?)
Hey Minnie..I remember those..the flying saucer candy..lol. I always went for those Swedish fish and red hot dollars. When I go into a Spains store today, I always get a few pieces for old times sake..lol. BTW..one of my best friends works for Goldenbergs..you know, the Peanut Chew candy place. Not only are they terrific employers but they give out bags of the goodies all the time to their workers. Do I have to say I visit my friend often..?..lol
Trish
..in the interest of sweet things.... Do you know how hard it is to live within smelling distance of the Nabisco baking headquarters..?..lol The entire area smells of chocolate all day and it's hard to concentrate just driving by the place..it smells tooooooooo yummy!..lol
Trish
oh minnie those little wafers were the best, we use to get them at the penny store on the way home from school.(the name of the store was Dot's) I pigged out on Mary Jane's and that roll up licorice.(it was a quarter) This past summer a candy store opened up in Stone Harbor,N.J. which is 2 minutes from my house. Not only do they have a little pond out front but the best assortment of OLD penny candy around. Rockcandy on a stick, maryjanes, and the famous flying saucers with the little beads inside. I was late for work quite a few days, I just could not make up my mind... This thread will have us all going down memory lane!!!
Minnie, I had completely forgotten about the flying saucer candy until you mentioned it. I guess once I found chocolate I never looked back.
Dicentra, I will gladly trade locations with you this summer! Smithfield - the ham capital of the world, as they say, is 15 miles away. It's hard to concentrate when you drive in the vicinity of the packing plant, and even worse when you are lucky enough to get behind a tractor trailer load of hogs! lol Count your sweet blessings.
Ruby42, considering the interest in the flying saucer candy you may be able to trade it for seeds! ;o)

Anyone ever been to Hershey, PA? Oh lord... stayed there for the infamous car show one year... all weekend... woke up to the smell of chocolate, smelled chocolate all day, fell asleep dreaming of chocolate. I pretty much broke out just from the smell. This was like 12 years ago or so... imagine being 13 and having to deal with that... it was glorious... :)
Nephs, that is one of my dream vacation spots! I hope to make it there on day...SOON! I really think that would be my heaven on earth! LOL! LIsa
Mmmmm..... Just had half pound of Valentine chocolates for breakfast!
The sugar crystals in grandmothers peach brandy.I got a spanking everytime !

I guess I'll have to show my age.
I'm sure most of you don't remember
penny candy. My dad use to take me
to a old General Store for Licorice
Whips, you could get 6 for a nickel.
I can still close my eyes and see
and smell that old store.
Honeybee
Although I am a 100% chocoholic, I do love a candy that my mother and I make for the holidays called "The Boss". It's made out of Sugar, White Syrup, and 1 quart of fresh thick cream. Rich and Yummy!
Heidi
I am so excited that you guys know about the flying saucer candy!!! I'm NOT crazy! Ruby....we need to talk :)
Minnie (Janice)
BTW..Have been to Hershey PA. Great place. Great place to stay is Simons Motel. Very nice place, very nice owners. Very homey. Nice decor that isnt nailed down. I left my favorite dress there and they mailed it to me!! very reasonable rates. I am not affliated with them in any way but they definatly left a lasting impression on me with their hospitality!!
Janice
You all forgot to mention that in Hershey, the street lights look like Hersey's Kisses. Yes,it's chocolate for me too.
Any of it is great, but the very best is the dark chocolate with no fillings or other flavors to compete with the taste.
If it is filled,Brussels chocolate(yep, from Belgium) is heaven on earth.
Honeybee, don't worry about the age thing. I think some of us may have hinted about hip size too. ;o)
(Mark)(Northerner) - Are you there!! My favourite is FRYS CHOCOLATE CREAM .........I'm drooooling!
kinda funny, but seems almost all women that have answered my question... hehehe
Hi Louisa!! Yes I remember Fry's Chocolate Creams. I like anything with Chocolate. Fry's Turkish Delight is pretty good too! Chocolate buttons as well. And how about chocolate walnut whips? Easter eggs of course. My favourite chocolate maker is probably Thorntons. That's a British firm. At least I think it is. Terry's Chocolate Orange is probably my absolute fave chocolate though. My Dad always used to give my sister and me a chocolate orange for Christmas at the bottom of our Christmas stockings. Christmas just doesn't seem the same without my orange.
But my real favourite sweet food is icecream. My Dad's too. We used to have it regularly with our strawberries for tea. We had a favourite icecream too. We used to go to a village called Great Ayton, it's a few miles from me, in the Dales. It has a village green and a stream with ducks in it. And stone-walled cottages. It's where Captain Cook the explorer went to school. They have a shop called Suggitt's that sells the most delicious icecream. It's only plain vanilla but the taste is out of this world. We used to take my Auntie Greta there when she came on holidays with us. If we were there without her I'd send her postcards - anonymous. She always used to guess who it was and I'd ring her up and she'd say "You cheeky young besom!" to me on the phone. A lot of very happy memories. Just a humble vanilla icecream.
Northerner, It's always the little things that matter the most. There is not a lot I do miss in the UK because Virginia reminds me so much of home, except Virginia has more undulating topography which is wonderful. But to go off thread for a minute - I really miss fish and chips!!!!
If you're over here on holiday to see your brother I'll treat you to fish and chips. Do you like them soggy or crisp BTW?
We used to get sweets at a shop on the corner of my street. We used to get liquorice shoelaces and sherbet dabs and sugar mice.
Oh I see someone else knows the magic of See's candy! Oh YUM!!!!! I grew up in CA and had been missing See's for years (living east of the Mississippi!) until the WEB came to my rescue! Although it's incredibly expensive, it is sooooooo worth it! I love their California brittle, milk chocolate divinity (can't wait for Irish potatoes to come back!!), their chocolate covered carmels with nuts are divine (like their pecan/carmel "turtles")......but my all-time #one favorite is from Godiva -- the milk chocolate starfish with raspberry jelly filling! Oh yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dicentra -- I know exactly what you're talking about with the smell from the Nabisco factory.....my husband used to teach computer classes right near there and would just go nuts coming home every night!! He said sometimes he'd just sit there and wait through the lights (when there was no traffic, natch!) and just "sniff"! (Sounds kinda weird now that I've typed that, but trust me, he's a nice, safe guy! Just a big cookie monster!!)
Do you know that I'm only about 10-20 minutes from you in Moorestown?
When I was growing up (in Turkey) we didnt have even one tenth nay - one one hundredth of the candy that is available here.... but what was available was great. one of my favorite things, was a sweet sold by street vendors, well, how to explain this so you can visualize this and get the full jist of it...the andy was of course home made, the container it was in was a large round (lets say like a cake pan) with dividers (visualize pie slices) and in each of these compartments was a sweet candy, the consistancy of taffy, in all colors, I would say there were ten compartments, so there were ten colors - like red, yellow, green see thru colors, and the way it was served: the seller would have a screw driver, and he would twirl it in the candy, then twirl it on a piece of bamboo, he would start with one color, and end with all colors being twirled around the bamboo, then he would sprinkle lemon juice on it, my mout waters just thinking about it, and to give you a further visual, this pan like thing, would have legs, and a domed glass cover, they would carry these contraptions on their head...... things have changed a lot in turkey, last time I was there, i wanted some of this candy, but couldnt spot one of these sellers.....
okay, so this is off the wall I know, so I'll tell you my other favorite candy. We were raised in a convent, the nuns were from Italy, and they had Italian licorice, and as a treat we would get one once in a great while, it was to die for. To this day, I always look for different types of licorice trying to imitate that flavor.
Another funny candy story....In a small village close to Izmir, they have a festival and throw candies from the top of a mosque, to the people standing below. this has become so famous tht people from all over the region go there to catch this candy. and they only do it once a year. this candy is said to have 100 spices in it, and it is quite tasty. But you can imagine the spectacle, candy raining down from a mosque and people srambling to catch some.
enough rambling, I hope you were able to visualize what I was trying to explain, my kids cant visualise the taffy type candy, and cant even figure out what the big deal is...
It's time for my favorite downfall in the stores...
Cadbury Chocolate Eggs.... oh boy...
Pebble, those were the neatest stories!! I am so glad you shared them. Good job on the mental visual too! How neat! Lisa
Hey chocoholics did ya'll check out JoanMN's picture for today? It is titled "a few of my favorite things". Yummy! Lisa http://davesgarden.com/showthread/photos/10390.html
