This group of bugs (apparently a momma and a bunch of babies) were on my canna plants - do I leave them alone (are they going to help me or hurt me?)?

Those are leaf-footed bugs, and they suck the juice from plants. Bad bugs.

ok thanks - they looked different than most of the leaf footed bugs we have (stink bugs!), so I wasn't sure. I know there are some bugs (that kill other bugs) that look similar, so I didn't know if these were the good ones or some of the bad ones.

You can tell by that flattening of the back leg. When you see that, you know you are dealing with a leaf-footed bug. That is what the name refers to....
