I always thought they only appeared once every 17 yrs,but I've had them for the last 3 yrs.
One landed in one of my cups that I have a foxtail seedling just popping above the surface a couple inches,it laid on it's back wiggling his legs like he was dying so I turned him over, but he died right they, never moved again,I saw where another one had left it's shell in there as well, wonder what might be the attraction of the greenhouse?
Cicadas
There are other Cicadas that show up more often, or even every year, like the "dog day" cicadas, and others:

Thanks
That was very informative and interesting,it had been raining for almost 2 days here,I was just thinking he came out of the rain, and apparently just run out of gas!
Yes the adults don't live very long, compared to the years spent underground. They might like whatever's growing in your greenhouse : (
Could be,but only thing I have in there now,are palms, Bromilaids and eppiphyllums!
Down here we have them every summer, all summer long. They make the nights very noisy.
You mean even nosier than the frogs and crickets?????
Guy a work said his Marlins have already migrated south for the winter,so look for a early fall!!!
He said they have never left before the 3rd week in September before,he said him and his neighbor both check the marlin houses, and sure enough they have left, until next spring.
I told him they might be back, all the rain we had I'm sure more mosquitoes will show back up!!!
Oh yea, they're a lot noisier than frogs and crickets. But they take breaks from making noise, all of them will be going at once then they quit for a few minutes, so you hear the frogs and crickets, then there they go again. I wish I had a good recorder and some sound, I'd love for ya'll to hear what summer nights sound like. I've only lived here for a little over a year, and it amazes me.
One of my little dogs will eat them if she can find them on the ground just before they die.
100% protein!!! LOL
lol protein, too funny! It's a loud buzzing noise, not like the buzz of a bumblebee or wasp, and not as deep as a hummingbird, it's a weird buzz.
We're in the high 80's all week. June and July were above 100 mostly with no rain, we were our own dust bowl.
Same here, enjoyed the cooler weather, could this be the sign of a early fall?
Has anybody seen a woolly caterpillar yet?
Those are so gross.
I had 3 on my tomato plant, I put them on top of an ant hill and when the ants started to attack they puked green slime. At that point the ants retreated. I won't step on them unless they're still small, I can't stand the feeling of the soft squish. YUK!
We have those "every summer" cicadas here, too. Dog days cicadas. All summer long! There is a large wooded area behind our property, and they must be very thick in there. Starting in early July, they are so loud at night that you can't hear anything else -- absolutely deafening. We can't sit on the outside deck and carry on a conversation. There are other cicadas that are not every year like these, but are on a shorter time schedule than 17 years.
Karen
Makes you wonder how they can live 17 yrs underground,no wonder there so noisy when they emerge!!LOL
Ah, yes, the quiet, peaceful country life. LOL.
Karen
Been in the low to mid 70's and 80's for the last 2 weeks,I think my garden has grown more during this time, but atlas summer returns with low 90's tomorrow!
What bugs is everyone talking about???
You ought to see the huge spider webs I fight every morning, going out to get the paper!
Here's the sidewalk that runs parallel to the street in front of my house,I will properly run into 5 to 6 spiders and webs, before I turn up the sidewalk to the front door!
Nice forest. We have lots of cicadas- but not to that noise point. That would mean a trip for the ear plugs.
Excess of Japanese Beetles (more than one is an excess) Always have lots of spiders, we pretty much ignore each other. I may move an web portion if it is in the way,, but they do so well in taking care of the gnats! Way too many nasty mosquitos after the flooding. We are now in a dry spell, but they are still around. Drat.
I am hearing the crows and blue jays of fall..and I haven't finished my spring garden chores yet. :(
Thanks,May have to do spring chores in with the fall chores!!!LOL
Thats Kansas ? LOL looks like Florida :) hence the name Tropicman ? wow that is great . Yes i live in the woods and do fight the webs going in the woods. Ick. when they run across your face uhg.
Marcia crazy isn't it. We had a late fall last year and a very extended winter till April ! ice storms in April . ? late summer but cooler than usual We hit 91 only once this year. No complaints here . LOL and it seems fall is here already ? where did summer go ?
Thanks,
One of my friends from work, came over today as we were off today, brought his new wife, they were married in April In Jamaica, and she said I had more flowers and plants than they had there!!!How that made me feel good!!!
Not familiar with St Paris Ohio,is it anywhere close to Marcia,in New Madison?
Yep Kids went back to school this week,so is summer officially over???
92* here and very windy, seems summer game back!!!!
I am becoming to accept "strange weather" as normal. We had over 100" of snow this past winter, June flooding ..but now just regular dry, hot August.
I live just outside of Madison WI...or Mad City as it is locally known. The University of WI keeps things hopping ( plus all us Really old alumni--from the hippie days), lend a certain flair to the area.
Marcy1,lives in the southwest corner of Ohio, near Dayton,I thought you were referring to her.
So you live close to the cincy area then!
Hmm are you saying that people from the hippie area are old???LOL!
Hmmm what would be the beatnik area then???LOL
Just funning with you!
Yes I remember those days well myself!!!
And yes there refer it to mad city when they talk about it from the central region of the US as well!
I guess you people can take the cold better than anyone else, even the Eskimos!
Me on the other hand become stiff as a board and can hardly walk!
That she is,
been trading plants with her for years ,a very courageous woman!
A must see!!!LOL
priceless huh!
