I've heard that lilacs dont like to have anything planted under them. I would really like to add some bulbs and perenials for later in the year. Has any on had sucess with this
can I plant perenials under my lilac?
My lilac hedge spreads like crazy sending up shoots several feet away from the main bush. If we didn't mow around them I'd have a forest. I would't plant anything under them. Your perennials would get lost over time. Spring bulbs might work. If you just have one bush you could keep the bottom trimmed and use as a specimen plant. I have one lonely bush, far away from the hedge, that I keep trimmed as a multi-stemmed tree. Perennials do grow under that bush/tree or whatever it's called now.
I think dry shade perennials would do best, as long as yours aren't spreading as mentioned it should work.
