Let's See your Caladiums

Jacksonville, NC(Zone 8b)

Are there any zones that you can just leave them in the ground, and they come up in spring without digging them up? I leave my cannas that way and they do fine.
Thanks-Lynda

Lynda,

Unfortunately caladiums aren't as hardy as Cannas. If you had a real mild winter and you mulched over them real good, you "might" be OK but it's a longshot at best. Caladium bulbs DO NOT like cold weather!! If you had a real cold winter and they were left in the ground you'd be extremely lucky if they came back.

Bill if i want to do a large caladium bed for next year when do i order the bulbs and when do i plant them.

Florida should be okay all year round ...as well as the southern coastal areas and southern California...if the temps get below 40 for any extended period you WILL lose your caladiums bulbs..they will turn to mush...

I live in zone 9, Daytona Beach Florida and I never dig up my caladium bulbs ... I'm just too lazy. We are fortunate here with mild winters most of the time and only an occasional night or two with temp's in the 30's. But, over the years we have had frosts and freezes where temp's go down into the 20's for a night here and there, and the bulbs do not survive even with heavy mulching. Caladium's are a warm weather plant and don't like cold. I think the prices are so reasonable that it's worth it to just order new each spring.

Ocoee (W. Orlando), FL(Zone 9b)

I'm in West Orlando and leave them in the ground/outdoor pots all year long. They eventually go dormant, but pop back up every year. I order a few more to tuck in just incase one or 2 rotted/squirrel dug it up/dog dug it up/ etc....

When is the caladium coop offered? In the spring?? Also, I didn't have a clue that cladiums BLOOMED...... I have some different varieties that I received in a garden swap in pots and much to my surprise one of them have bloomed. Is this normal??? I have never seen that before. None of my others are blooming either...............

Thanks

Genna, I'm sure there will be another Caladium Co-Op in the Spring so keep watching the Co-Op forum after the first of the year for mention of it.

Yep, the Caladiums do send up blooms sometimes but they are mainly grown for the lovely, colorful foliage!

Thanks.... I will try to watch for it.

Here are some of my Callas and Caladiums. They put on a good show. I have more to dig if we don't get a freeze while I am away for a few days. They stored well last year. Patti
