I found this one flying around in my house, I think I noticed it only because It was driving my cats nuts as they tried to catch it. Sorry it isn't as clear as I would like it to be. Does anyone know the name of this insect/moth.
CLOSED: 1/4" moth?
Not a moth, but a moth fly (Diptera: Psychodidae). Also known as drain flies or sewer flies, their larvae feed on organic films such as those that can build up in floor drains. They can become nuisance pests indoors - see http://www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/iiin/mothfli.html
Oh! YUK We did have a leak in our clothes washer hose that took a while to find but has been fixed. Hope this will solve my fly problem. Thanks for the reply. I never would have looked under flies for an ID.
Hope the repair solved the leak problem for you. I think I would pour some bleach down in that area based on what the article said.
Don't forget to mark the thread as solved.
I did forget. Thanks again :)
this tiny fly has a lot of common names such as drain flies, sewer flies, filter flies, moth flies and so on. But i usually call it as sewer flies as it implies the source of infestation and where it comes from. They usually breed in sewage contaminated drains, septic tanks, sewers and soil.
Regularly pouring hot water into the gulley trap or use bleach, chemical products for cleaning the floor traps will be good to prevent the infestation and even remove the breeding source. There is no need for engage the pest control service before the infestation becomes serious. The most important thing to remember is to repair any leakage and clean up the contaminated traps.
Thanks for your concern canely, we did get my leak fixed and I'll be on the look out for any more flies. So far so good.
