Is this indeed a Snipe Fly? Doesn't have the reddish eyes, but otherwise it fits the bill.

CLOSED: Snipe Fly??
Nope. This is a robber fly (Diptera Asilidae) - note that the vertex of the head is depressed between its eyes, this is characteristic of this family. Also, the legs are much more robust than those of a typical snipe fly (family Rhagionidae) - see http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/snipe_flies_rhagionid_flies for some examples.
Thanks! That would have been my second guess.
