What are your Top 10 (or more) Favorite Cultivars?

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

I know everyone has their favorites based on bloom colors & patterns, leaf characteristics, growth habits, etc

I would love to see which ones ... YOU actually grew ... that have become your Top Ten Favorite MGs! If you have more than 10, that's okay ... I soooo understand how hard it is to choose! :-)

I have only been growing them since last year. I think I have probably grown about 50-60 different cultivars and crosses so far. Of all of those that I have grown, these are my favorites (kinda in order of how much I love them, but that changes from day to day and bloom to bloom!):

1 - Lady Yaguruma's Kaleidoscope
2 - Kohkan
3 - Hanahubuki (or a cross of some sort)
4 - Dracula
5 - Fuji Hot Pink Frost
6 - Plum Shadows
7 - Yaguruma Blizzard
8 - Rabenda X President Bush (We need to name this one, Antoinette!)
9 - Purple Tie-dye
10 - Mutant Blue Needle Leaf Nandling (What a weird name!)
11 - Pink Porcelain
12 - Morning Storm
13 - Joyce Cobb (Blue Form)
14 - Dark Pink Triple Feathers

What are yours?????

Wow, I can see why you have 14 and not only 10! Surely impressive!! I have started some of mine for the new season, and can't wait! Will keep you all updated.

Gautier, MS

They are so beautiful, Awesome blooms Becky!!

Thanks, Elsa and Helena!

I wanna see what some of your favorite vines are, too! They can be currently growing vines or some that you grew last year or in previous years. No need to put them in a collage format like I did. I just did that to save space for everyone else's favorite blooms to be posted! :-) I really wanna see what others find special in their vines!

So PLEASE post away!!! :-)

Elsa - Is your growing season just starting? You had some beauts last year if my memory serves me well! How many are you starting this year?

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Oooooh! Those are sooooo pretty, Ronnie! Hard to pick, isn't it? ^_^

Okay, could ya post a single photo of each of these two?
"Sazanami"
"Dai"

That's so funny that you posted a photo of "Sazanami" because I just inquired about it on another thread. Yours looks different than the one listed on Onalee's website:
http://onaleeseeds.bizhosting.com/jmg_sazanami.html

But I like yours better. It looks very similar to what seedsower posted in PlantFiles:
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/179067/

You know I just have to inquire ... were you able to get any seeds from it????

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Hey Becky,
My original Saznami came from Arlan. I am growing out some this year and also one from Joseph. I bought the "Saznami Ripple" from onalee this year but can't remember if I started any. (I'll check, some things didn't do well for me this year) I kind of think hers looks a bit like a blue silk. Arlan's Saz last year was one of my best, but stingy in the seeds department. I have 4 left can hold 2 for you. You can grow out some and save me some seeds.

The Dai originally came from Arlan also. I may have a few seeds of that one left for you. It produced solid white and the purple streak and lots of inverted tubes. Was a real looker.

Becky,
Our official Spring Date is 1 September. I am afraid I am totally obsessed - after starting another 9 pots today, I have a total of 47 that I carry indoors every night (into the sitting room if you don't mind! Luckily DH is very easy going) and back out again the next morning. It was so cold on Monday that they stayed indoors the whole day. Even the dogs know not to "touch" or even look at my pots. LOL!!
Let me quickly get to the other computer (this one is DH's without photos). Will be back in a jiffy...

Ronnie - You had me at Hello! ... LOL!

Seriously, I would love 1 or 2 seeds from Arlan's Sazanami! I so truly would be indebted and would certainly send you back seeds from a grow-out of that breath-taking vine! Thank you so very, very much!!!

Arlan also shared seeds with me of Dai. I haven't grown any out yet, they are next to be planted. I wanted to see what the blooms looked like again because I didn't remember. I am definitely going to grow them next!!!

Thank you for the single shots of each. BEAUTIFUL!!! I am soooo having withdrawals from MGs. Only one or two vines still cranking out a few blooms here and there. Kohkan has few leaves and still such stunning blooms! I am in love!!! ♥

The pictures are in no particular order, as it changed weekly...

This was labeled "Hanahubuki", and had plain pink flowers at first. After a few, it had these, and I must say, I just loved them...

Elsa123 - this one looks like Chachamaru - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5382260. This one of yours is very pretty, too! http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/fp.php?pid=5382229

As for my favorites, they are:

1) Aomurasakizyouhantenshibori - my very first JMG!
2) Chachamaru
3) Heian no Izumi
4) I. obscura
5) I. hederifolia var. lutea
6) Dracula
7)
8)
9)
10)

I'm leaving the last few blank, because I still have SO many seeds I haven't planted yet, or vines I'm waiting on to bloom!

Elsa - VERY lovely selection of favorites! I agree with Nichole ... your pink & white one looks like Chachamaru. I, too, love your first one! WOW! I mean what beautiful blooms! I am fascinated with your speckled blooms, too! So pretty all of them! Thanks for sharing your favorites with me! :-)

Thomasville, GA(Zone 8a)

I hope no one get angry if I ask a question not on subject. Do I have to soak the MG seed before I put it in a coffee filter? I have success with other seeds that way and hope I can also do these seeds. Thanks

Pretoria, South Africa

Thanks so much for your kind words. I still have to see a "ugly" MG.

Whitsett, NC(Zone 8a)

Kamikid - alot of people start their MG seed that way . . . works very well!

Thomasville, GA(Zone 8a)

Thank you. I will do that. I just was not sure about the soaking.
