This most likely is an introduced species, the Chinese mantis (Tenodera aridifolia sinensis) - see http://animal-visual.com/getitext.php?i=Insect/Chinese-Mantis.jpg

There are several species of native mantids as well; they just tend to be smaller and less conspicuous than either the Chinese mantis or the European mantis (Mantis religiosa), another introduced species. The European mantis can be identified by having a dark spot on the inside of its upper foreleg - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:Mantis_religiosa_Linnaeus.jpg - this area cannot be seen in your photo.
