How to use fresh strawberries for seeds?

Greenacres, WA

I have a few strawberries, I am wondering about using them to start my own plants. I have never done this and need some input on how to get started? Thank You
Is it better to buy the plants?

Honestly, I've never seen strawberry seeds, only the plants, so maybe it is more difficult, or perhaps it just takes the plants a while before they start to produce and no one is willing to wait.

Perhaps someone will come along that knows different from me... but I bought the plants!

Hello neighbor! I know that generally you do produce strawberries off the runners. I think it's mainly that they produce so well off runners, that very few bother with seeds, assuming they can be grown from seeds. I bet that people would send you runners if you wanted some. I would, but all I have is decorative. If you want any of those all send you all of them! I am interested if someone does have an answer to your question.

They definitely can be started from seed but most people get plants or runners instead. Here's a site that gives instructions for how to separate out the seeds from your strawberries. http://www.farminfo.org/garden/strawberries.htm And here are instructions from Thompson & Morgan on how to start them--just click on one of the different types of strawberries to see the directions http://www.tmseeds.com/ilist/group/strawberry.html/?SA=1496

Thank You for the replies I think that is good.

Zhinu... your decorative strawberries. Do they happen to be the Fragoo series? I keep hunting for them.

I have no clue what they are. They are small, put out flowers but no fruit.

Thanks Zhinu for the information and the pic... They not the Fragoo series then, they make fruit. Haven't seen ones that just make flowers only and the Fragoo is an ornamental type too.

What ya might do when they make flowers is take a q-tip and hand pollinat ethem yourself. Could be you have a type that is not self pollinating and needs bees. May it will work and maybe not. Couldn't hurt to try it. Thanks again!

Anything is possible. I've had them for 5 years I think, I've had bees on them, and I've never had fruit.

When we bought this house, there were some strawberry plants in the corner of the yard. Can't kill the darn thing and they spread all over the place. Drive me nuts!
