How do you pollinate banana tree flowers?

Baytown, TX(Zone 9a)

We have alot of banana trees and they put out flowers often. We usually only get 5-12 bananas per tree.

Does anyone know how to pollinate them? I would love to know! Thank you!

Your question is very difficult to answer. From what little bit I have read, many bananas have lost their ability to produce seed. The males do not pollinate the females. It is possible to hand pollinate your plants, but in many instances no seeds are produced and even when they are many fail to germinate. The usual method of reproduction is detach the pups from the base of the mother plant after they have formed a good root system of their own.

If you post your question on one of the tropical forums you might get much better advice than I have given here from growers who have actually attempted to do this.

Lynn, thank you for your response. My main desire is to get the trees to produce more bananas. We have over 90 banana trees, and they do produce alot of pups.
We actually gave away 20 last year.

We only get 5-12 bananas per bunch (hand). I would like to have more, but I haven't found anywhere that it tells how to do that.

Again, Thanks for your response.
