CLOSED: Wood-boring bee?

Titusville, FL(Zone 9b)

We are having a problem with a bee (looks kind of like a bumble bee) that is boring holes in the 2x4's that support the roof to our Tiki hut. I think they are carpenter bee's. Does this sound right? How do I get rid of them or make the area unattractive for them? I'm afraid they are going to drill so many holes that our tiki will fall apart!!!

Certainly sounds like large carpenter bees (Xylocopa spp.); they resemble bumble bees except that their abdomen is shiny rather than fuzzy. Usually, they will not attack wood that is painted or stained; see http://ohioline.osu.edu/hyg-fact/2000/2074.html for more information, including control advice.

Thanks! That's definitely the bee and it's tunnel!! I wonder if Thompson's water seal would work as well. We've had this Tiki for 3 years and this is the first year we've noticed carpenter bees in this area (or at all). I wonder why now?! Must be we have tasty wood! :-)

Thanks again!
