Henny Penny and Future Friends

Columbia, TN(Zone 7b)

You're welcome Catscan. I only did it by accident after I caved in and bought a bag of crumbles. Couldn't bring myself to toss the pellets so I poured the crumbles in a little at a time mixing them in. After a while a light went off so I only mixed in half the bag and served it that way. Now I have half a bag of crumbles to mix with the other bag of pellets ^_^

Claire,

Check this out. You have to get some!

Those are gorgeous Potagere!! I would love to get some!

My favourite is that yellow porcelain d'Anvers from Sweden, and the Quail d'Anvers hen from the UK.

I also like the mottled black one.

The chicks are ADORABLE!!! And it even says that the hens are very friendly and make great pets. However will I keep this chicken habit under control?!

Claire

I knew when you started that Tysons was in trouble. Of coursem you're in even more trouble! If you have as many chickesn as Tysons, and don't eat them, where will this all end? Moxon Farms will occupy all of Iowa by the end of the decade! That could include our old family farm near West Branch!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I am trying to contemplate raising the roosters for eating. I'm not sure if I can. I am still contemplating. I know it's pathetic - I'm just awfully soft hearted about that sort of thing.

I did just purchase the 3 acres next to me to expand my land to 8.5 acres, because I figured I might need it....

Yes, and then there's the goats ... And how can you get by without donkeys? It's not yet 40 acres, but shouldn't you have a mule? And those piglets at the fair were so cute! How are going to find time to GROW anything?

You certainly ARE having fun, though!

And I really fo think you need to have some of those Antwerp Bantams!

Lumberton, TX(Zone 8b)

HELP! THE CHICKEN FAIRY HAS PUT POTAGERE UNDER THE IMPERIUS CHARM!

BUCK-ENABLER-BUCKAAAAAAAAWWWWWWW!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Brigid, you are right!! However shall we fix this? Poor Potagere will be lurking around barnyards late at night, seeking out the perfect chicken...

Definitely no piglets. No, no, and that's final. I am a HUGE bacon fan, and I cannot possibly even dream of owning a pig and potentially cutting myself off from bacon permanently. It cannot and will not happen!!!

I would really like one of those miniature donkeys I saw at the fair. I also thought it would be a good "guard" animal to have a full size one, plus a friend for the goats. I doubt that I need a mule. I am already stubborn enough!

But the Antwerp bantams....I am on the hunt!

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

yep, i always suspected Potarege was lurking & working for the CF... i love the D'Anvers, but went for the D'Uccles instead, less meanness in the roos. well, that and i got two in my assortment LOL...

if i got one i would want the rumpless version, the D'Gruppe, or is that D'Derrier?

tf

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

That would be pas-de-derriere!!

FYI all, Henny Penny is acquiring 3 new friends. I just got 3 serama pullets from someone on BYC. She lives in Iowa and is coming into Des Moines area on September 6. Two black and one mottled black and white pullet. SO excited. And SO blaming TF for this latest development...

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

wtg there claire, I think you are so on your own now. Yes maybe Tam started it but...............

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Well if I ever acquire an Antwerp Bantie, I am totally blaming Potagere.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

yes, and then you just bring it to me...

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh no no no, you don't have THAT much control over me! LOL!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

I think I might have one or 2 of them

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Here's a pic of my future seramas - the 3 with black are mine.

one or 2 of what?

Central, VA(Zone 7b)

Very handsome birds, CMoxon. On FeatherSite I loved the D'Anvers. Is it possible to find these in the US?

Prophetstown, IL(Zone 5a)

just caught up on this thread...I'm laughing so hard....Claire...you're a goner...LOLOL

I've NOT been lurking! I was actually looking up Leucanthemum 'Etoile d'Anvers" when I ran across these beautiful birds. I knew my friend Claire would want them, so I rushed here to tell her about them. And, of course, to check that the rest of you were not encouraging her to acwuire too many strange birds. Or convert an old Airstream trailer into a giant eglu! Or buy that baby elephant on eBay!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Oh come on Potagere....admit it....you were lurking because you want your own chickens. And you are MUCH more likely to find the d'Anvers over there than I am. And I positively LOVE your airstream idea. I'd best start checking the local classified ads...

As for the d'Anvers banties...in case anyone wants to know...

Looks like they're available from Texas...

My cats would finish off the chickens before they got settled in the Airstream!
Hey, but check out the new Star Stream trailers. Expandable giant eglus!

Lodi, United States

I will never look at an Airstream the same way again.......

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

I think one of these would be awfully cute. Then I could travel with my hens!

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

Potagere - you bring out the crazy chicken side in us! LOL!

Josh - I didn't know how to "write" the catchy music bit, but it was in my head!

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

that was good one CM Now I have the song in my head.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

OK all, here's a serious question. Yes, occasionally I can be serious!!

I'm soon getting the remaining hens from my colleague who is moving to Colorado. They have been free ranging with 3 roos. When I get the hens (not getting the roos), they will have been having "interactions" with the roos, I would suppose. So, for the first couple of weeks, should I let them sit on any eggs that they lay, in case they are fertile? Is there a way to look at an egg (candle?) to see if it is fertile? How long after the hens are separated from the roos will the likelihood of laying fertile eggs continue? I would not mind having those chicks hatch if there are fertile eggs, so I want to figure out what I should do when they get here and start laying.

Claire

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

1st you would have to have one that will sit on the eggs. And from what I have learned here is the chickens eggs will be fertile for about 30 days after being with a rooster.

Oxford, NS(Zone 5b)

When I was over visiting them, there were like 3 of them sitting on eggs already. I bet they will sit if I let them...

(Tia) Norman, OK(Zone 7a)

that would be nice if they would.

Fritch, TX(Zone 6b)

can't you get the eggs that were being set on?
