I have started several seeds using both the Park bio sponge and the Chia Herb garden sponge. A question has come up about the binding medium (the majority of the product is peat moss). Can plants started in these be considered organic? I can't find any information on what the binding agent is or what it's made from. Are there any alternative binding agents that are organic?
Thanks,
Jane
Question about bio sponge/grow sponge
Are you looking to sell the stuff you grow and call it organic, or are you just looking to grow as organically as possible because you feel that's the best way to grow things? If you're just doing it for yourself, then I think as long as you're not using synthetic pesticides and fertilizers you can feel fine. But if you want to sell it and claim it's organic then it's more important to figure out whether this would be following OMRI guidelines or not.
I am looking both to grow organic as well as sell (small scale) as organic. It just concerns me that although several sites sell various versions of these grow sponges, there is no information about what they are made of other than peat.

The sites that sell them probably wouldn't know, the best thing to do is look at the label on the package and the manufacturer should have an 800 number that you can call for information, complaints, etc.
