Yup, it's a spider all right! It's either one of the spiny orb weavers such as those in the genus Gasteracantha - see http://home.att.net/~larvalbugbio/eye/gallery-spiny.html, or possibly a star-bellied orb weaver, Acanthepeira stellata - see http://www.pbase.com/tmurray74/image/62155462
