Will be visiting Portland-any suggestions?

Ditto, thank you.

BIL put their bat house on a pole, I'll see what they did about the pulley.

Dryer sheets work to, rub them on you then stick it in you pocket or under your collar.

Jan, so pleased you had a great trip. Having the grandkids around made you as happy as any garden would have. However, depending on their ages, I think they would be rather fascinated by the Chinese Garden, as it's large, but no too large, and has a water feature and numerous nooks and crannies. Also, there is a cool gift shop where the prices are not astronomical. Kids are always lured in by neat little gizmos.

Back to the clay soil. Even with a mattock, it's discouraging when you have like 15 babies to plant, but want to really give them a good start in life. I feel like that hole could never be big enough, but then I tend to poop out. It's good to hear there is some nutrition in there, but I don't really get the clay bowl concept. Explain, please. Does the clay actually drain?

Mosquitoes? They love me, and we both love the garden when the sun is down. I thought the dryer sheet thing might just be an urban legend. does the brand matter? Somewhere I read that the old brown Listerine would keep mozzies off your deck area, so I thought if I sprayed it on me, it would at least be less toxic than DEET. Haven't tried it yet. Although I hate to have itchy welts all over me, I hate even more the thought of West Nile Virus. It is still with us, and I sure would miss my crows. I understand parts of the country are now devoid of crows. Sad, sad, sad.

It was proven to me that they work, dosn't matter what kind.

We use them for bees at picnics, just pin them around on the table cloths. It works for that, never thought about trying it for mosquitos. Thanks tils.

Yes, Velveteena. We have had an unusual abundance of crows in Woodinville this year, and I've heard the same from friends in the city. I posted an inquiry about this on the bird forum and someone from Wisconsin said that all their crows are gone from West Nile. Sad. I just heard that Snohomish County is planning for cost reductions and that the West Nile Virus task force will be a casualty.

Good news, though, I saw on the CDC website that not everybody gets terribly ill with West Nile. Many people have mild symptoms or no symptoms.

The person that told me this and proved it to me is a super RVer, and camps everywhere. We where at a campout with them, and they where eating me alive, she went to her RV and got one rub it on me and stuck it in my pocket, spent the rest of the evening around the camp fire
and watch the little ####s buss around me but never land. true story. I just don't like the smell of them. Skin so Soft by Avon works good to.

Don't know about the draining. I'm assuming that it will. I'm going on hearsay from DDIL's grammy who lives with them.

Will have to try the dryer sheets again. It didn't work before, but am willing to give it a go. Avon's SSS is too oily for me. I used that when I played softball down in the swamplands. Yuck, we were covered in bugs. They stuck to the stuff on our skin. Granted, they were dead, but it sure was icky.

Next time I go out, I'll give the Chinese Garden a go. The kids would love the water feature. I'll also have to do the fountain in Beaverton. Water shoots up out of the ground. That would have been great on those HOTTT days last week, but noooo, we were gardening instead. lol.

Be sure to visit the Oregon Garden in Silverton.

The Oregon Garden is very cool, and will be fabulous as it matures more. Be sure and check on top of the education building to see if the weather vane still faces the wrong direction! (My husband is an engineer and notices these things!) Also, adjacent to the property is a Frank Lloyd Wright home, a rarity in most areas around here. Your camera will love it, esp. the trees.

Jan, I live about 2 miles from the Oregon Gardens. August is a great time to visit. Very colorful at that time of year. The new Oregon Resort & Spa on the grounds is very nice if you want to spend a restful day in Silverton & pamper yourself a bit.

The Zinnia's were breath taking last summer.

Love zinnias. I'll show mom that yellow rose. They are her favorite. It was last summer when I was there and got soem plants to help fill in the street strip at my son's house.
Don't think I'll make it this summer, cuz my son's family is coming out here in July. Can hardly wait. It is also the summer for the kitchen reno. - Jeff picked up some more of the lumber this morning for that project.
I know that when I do come out, I will try to get together with as many DGers as possible. I just LOVE this site.

Today is Brewfest at the Oregon Garden and I'm going to do a bit of tasting :)

Look for citronella bracelets at the dollar store. Found some recently, and if I do again, I will load up. I wear them on my ankle, because the smell is overwhelmingly noxious to me.

Dryer sheet people---how much mileage do you get out of one sheet?
