Token, II
Shusui talk .... Please help a rookie to understand ....
I LOVE Sparks! Thanks for sharing your fish with us!
When you first got your fish I was fond of Big Blue and thought he was still looking great until I saw your new pic of Sparks. Wow, that fish surely has developed quite nicely in a short time. Obviously Sparks is very happy with you-very nice fins and colors. Are you feeding special foods to get those colors?
I'm happy to see your fish thriving so well!
Willie..butters is looking great! As to the black spot on the orange koi, I think you should look at it very closly to determine if it is an actual change of color or some kind of fungus etc. Hard to say by the picture.
As to your unnamed fish with the yellow, orange & white..it reminds me of something tropical. How about tequilla sunrise?
Two bullfrogs hanging out in the sun.
Thanks, All!
Sparks is quite the charmer!!! Butters, however, was initially an "iffy" (initially thought plain) choice, but now, as a part of the school, is most stunning. Both Butters and Sparks were purchased at the same time. When I was getting these two, BeaHive had just discovered her "yellow princess" was gone, and when I saw Butters with her butterfly wings spread, I thought she looked like an angelic version of Bea's Princess floating in the waters. No resisting Butters. We sometimes call her ButterBea.
However, Big Blue is the "first" and I think will always have that "special spot." Blue's left side is more photogenic than the right side, I think. Also, Token II has been a pleasant surprise.
When choosing Token, II (and Big Blue), I was thinking of MotherMole's troubles with the herons and decided I wasn't going to get a bunch of brightly colored koi that the heron would easily spot. Token was the first fish chosen for the pond, and I have to tell you ..... initially, I was thinking he was drab (color-wise), but WOW, when the sun gets on him, he is richly colored in shades of brilliant emerald greens and metallic golds. Beautiful. I thought he was just black when I saw him at the store, but now know that he is really an olive color.
The food I have been feeding them is purchased locally as the brand name of the nursery, "Arbordale." I got it because it claimed to be an immune and color booster .... what ever that means!! I ran out of that, and since Arbordale is a good 20 minute drive away, I have been using a "big box bought" koi food that boasts color boosting the past couple weeks.
I also have (3) solid orange koi (one shown above with patch of sumi on head) for whom I am still pondering names. My favorite one being a very pastel, metallic (almost peachy) orange. The tips of her fins seem to be painted in ivory or porcelain.
Hmmmm, Tequila Sunrise ........ Mom and Dad were going to initially name me Seagram because I was born 7 pounds, 7 ounces. Tequi (Tiki) .......... interesting.
Here's a more top view of Sparks.
Thanks for all of your encouragement, too!
Nice coloring on Sparks! He/she is very pretty!
Great pics Willie! The picture of Token is outstanding. Looks like antique gold and reminds me of japanese embroidery that I have seen.
Willie-how are your fish doing? Have I ever sent you a picture of my Bluey yet? I am nearly ready to put what is left of my fish back into the pond and will get new photo's of them before they go and hide out in the nooks and crevices. Bluey is a very cool fish (to me anyways).
Linda
Everyone is doing just fine, MM, Thanks!
Of course I want to see pictures of Bluey!! Several, in fact. :-)
The pond is almost under a large oak, and keeping up with the leaves and the acorns is getting old fast. Need to get busy on getting that netting frame going.
Not sure but I think the leaves and acorns are adding a slight tinge to the water.
Everyone seems quite healthy, though I did find an anchor worm on one of the gold fish, so I have the dimilin treatments going. Treating twice, two weeks apart. Treated it just this past Sunday. Next treatment on the 28th.
Here is a shot of my Big Blue from Sept 7. I need to get the camera out there. Getting cold fast!
Once again....even a little bit o'sparks, makes me happy...what a great looking guy!
What a beautiful fish!
Big Blue!
Out of 100 shots, only two or three are really "acceptable" .....
I need a better camera. One that snaps immediately when I press the button and has the ability to FOCUS!!!
:-)
These fishes move so quickly, I can never catch the shot in time!!! Works OK on the flowers, but they ain't movin'!!
How is that dimalin treatment-that is probably one of the ONLY medicines I did not have to buy . . .lol! How did you notice the worms? Was the worms any of those black spots that you were concerned about a few weeks ago?
Willie, your fish are gorgeous!
Linda:
Here's what I saw in regards to Lernea Elegans, or Anchor Worms .....
I noticed a red spot near the base of the dorsal fin of one of the goldfish. Small spot, kind of like an inflamed mosquito bite, or pimple. VERY SUBTLE until the infestation got well under way.
After the red spots appear, they gradually become more pulpy and meaty looking, as the anchor worms head (which embedded under the scale and into the body of the fish) creates the perfect spot for a bacterial or fungal infection.
It is usually the "after infection" that you see ... this is after the fungal or bacterial infection has set in, started inflamation and begin to digest the area.
The TELL TALE SIGN is the actual worm that hangs off the wound. I believe these are the females and are laying hundreds of eggs into the water.
The worm is VERY hard to see, but looks like a hair, at first. Once they mature and fatten up, there is no mistaking them.
Here is a picture of Token II's Anchor Worm Wound. His has healed completely and you would never know it was so meaty/pulpy in that spot, as you see in the picture I posted yesterday of Token.
Thanks! Bsavage :-) They are certain a pleasure to care for.
Willie: Good information-thanks for the education. Seems that you have taken quite well to the fish/pond thing and have had very good luck with it the first year (unlike me, the Sad Mole. . . ).
I will try to get pictures of Bluey today to post.
Wanted to share my new babies.(excuse the messy holding tank. ) I was missing my yellow one so much that I had to get another. Well I came home with 5 yellow and 3 calico's. These are only 2-3 inches but very cute.
I have connections now to a lady in Silverton OR with a very large natural pond who has a zillion babies. If anyone is interested contact me via d-mail for the scoop. Great prices and fun catching them! She does not ship.
Awe .... look at the little babies ..... they look just like mine did when I got them in late july.
I am definitely going to get more yellow koi in the spring.
They look great, BeaHive!
I do NOT follow my own advice. Which is, don't add new koi to the pond after the beginning of September. Took a trip to the local pond store and went nuts over a Ginrin Ki Utsuri. A little guy just a 4". Sorry I don't have a picture cause because he wont stand still long enough and one of the other blunderbluss koi usually blocks the view. How odd to see a 4" next to a 30". I will get a shot, I hope. This is the most gorgeous koi I think I've ever seen. So, probably he won't hold his color. ;>)

Instead of quarantine I gave him(?) a quick PP dip. It needs all the pond acclimation time it can get.

Quaranteen people! Ahhh, I'm such a killjoy! V. V. Cute babies. I love the yellow's.
We all get weak when we see a cutie that we want! I went through a yellow streak all summer long, and now realize I need reds....so I'm trying to be good and not get a single fish that has yellow.
Willie: Did you ever name that one fish? It reminds me of Candy Corn (that Halloween candy)!
