Got around to getting some ponds pics......

Columbia, MO(Zone 5b)

Here are a few pics of the newly renovated pond that is the first one I started out with. This year I had some problems with the liner leaking. After a lot of tinkering with the spot where the stream meets the pond I finally drained the bottom pond to discover a big tear in the liner. Went to the local farm supply store and purchased a galvanized cattle pool so hopefully no more leaks! Keep in mind that the pool has only been in place for a couple of weeks and needs work. I planted some creeping ground covers in the cinder blocks which should hopefully drape over them and hide the blocks as they grow. :^)

Pic of the stream going from upper pond to lower pond. I constructed it to try and make it appear that the two were connected.

I really enjoy my little ponds. I come home from work to feed the fish and sit with the outside kitties. I think that I enjoy it more since every inch of it was dug out of thick clay one shovelful at a time. I shudder to think how many tons of clay I moved with my little spade and garden cart. It was well worth it though. Hope you enjoy it too. :^)

Looking good, TT! Can't wait to see more pics as it grows in!

I like it, too. Love the stream with the little ponds. Bet those cinder blocks will grow in nicely. What a nice sense of satisfaction knowing you did it all.

Very pretty! I especially love that pic of your stream!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Great job! I love the stream and the little waterfall at the top. This project will bring you pleasure for years to come.

Love the round pond. How cool is that. The ground cover will be wonderful haning around.

With the rain that we been fortunate to received the ground covers seem to be taking root. By next year I bet it will be grown in and pretty. The goldfish are enjoying their new home as the waterfall that empties into it is now a little stonger that it was before and they seem to enjoy playing in the current.

This is cool, Tetley! I like it!

hey guys, no fish in the metal galvanized pool. the metal releases lead into the water. also chems react with the metals, n I' m not sure how fast, but someone around here is better at comp links than i am

I had fish in my galvanized tank.. they were fine and grew very fast... too bad I did something dumb and killed them all. I have seen galvanized tanks as ponds around here for years.. with fish.

Tetley: Love your pond-especially how natural your stream looks. I that a little Piggie in the stream? I have a Mole in mine. . .

Dolores, CO(Zone 5b)

Kittriana... I wonder about that... if you're using a stock tank (water trough)... it can't have lead in it, because animals drink out of it, right? I've seen several here on DG with fish in them. Anyone have any other input on that? LouC has a nice one with fish in it...

My dad keeps goldfish inhis cattle troughs to eat the mousquitos and keep algea at bay... they live till a heron gets um

MM, it is a crouching cement cat. I just like the way it appears to be watching the fish. You could almost swear you see that tail twitch from time to time.

One of the local gardening centers has galvanized pools that they keep the water plants in that they sell. They apparently have had them for years with feeder goldfish in them to keep the misquitos under control. Some of those goldfish are getting pretty big but they will not sell them as they have become the pets of the staff.

Bensenville, IL(Zone 5a)

Very nice job on your ponds and stream. They do look natural and like they were naturally attached. I think the galvanized cattle troughs were a good idea and not a problem. I give all of you who hand construct your ponds by hand a heck of alot of credit. What alot of work but I can see first hand (no pun intended) how rewarding it is. One day I would love to have one when I have more room and where my dogs can't get at it to drink, swim, catch/eat fish. Great work!

tetley, post some pics from the end of summer, would love to see how it has progressed.

Sorry it has taken so long to get back to the thread. I do have some updated pics, thank you for reminding me Happgarden.

It has been a rollercoaster with this small pond this year. First there were liner problems with took a while to figure out, then the galvanized pool had to be put in but I had to think of a way for the waterfall to work without the outer edges of the pond being washed into it. That is the reason for the cinderblocks. Well that worked for little while and then the water level went down drastically again. Filled up the pool, turned off the falls and it seemed that there was a problem with the brand new galvanized pool as the water level dropped drastically again. NO WAY am I digging up that pool. Went to the home depot and explained what was going on and asked if there was something I could seal the seams with. Got sold some tar that was supposed to be good for that purpose... NOT. The stuff would harden up in the air and melt in the water. Lined the pool with another liner (which was a gift from the store I purchased the pool from) and finally put the cinderblocks back. Lot of fish loss this year. Not a lot of time for the poor plants to fill in but I think they will look good next year from the little I am seeing right now.
