Oh man, DH will have a fit with me. I bid on something and didn't note something in the description that now makes me not want the item. Is there a cancel button or do I just have to be a jerk and get a bad Ebay review by not paying????
HELP-new shopper to Ebay, need to cancel a bid?!?!
Bid ends in an hour so if no one posts here then would be no point except future FYI.
BUT I see the high amount I am paying was a HIGH MAX BID so really I am the highest bidder at a lower amount. Still, $36 I didn't want to spend on a smaller doll from my DD---was hoping it was a larger version. But I didn't read the size in the descript until placing my bid. My bad.
Once you place a bid, you have made a commitment.
If no one else bids, and your "maximum bid" was more
than the starting bid, you'll get the item for the starting
bid.
Just not paying is never a good idea.
There isn't a way to cancel, just like June said, you have made a commitment by entering a contract. I have done that before and just hoped and prayed I would get outbid. I would email the seller and let them know this has happened and see what they say.
Sorry, concern got the better when I was posting in the midst of it. The way I had MEANT to say it was---is the only way to get out of a bid is by being a jerk and not paying. I did not mean is that the only way I could get out of it.
As I'd already emailed the seller in asking a detail question I should have asked before bidding, I told the seller I would honor my bid regardless.
But in the end didn't have to I was outbid by $1. :)
YAY!! That's the way to go!!
Yep, that was the right thing to do. And your reward for
doing it was to be outbid on what you didn't want! Life works well. ;-)
Whew! :)
Now I have another Ebay question.
If I wrote a seller about something (in this case it was a glider chair) asking the make of it so I could research it more (wanting to know it was of good quality) and they emailed back quite rudely (among things, "I don't give out the manufacturer names of the things I sell" etc etc), is there a way in my acct to redflag just myself that in the future I would never want to buy from this person?
The EBay site had a 'community' area and an answer center where you can look up these things and also get answers from members. Also, there are discussions/chats (like DG) that you can go to. I know there is a myEbay area where your personal preferences can be entered and so I think maybe (maybe) there should be a place for you to list the sellers you don't want to do business with.
Thank-you, I've been trying to navigate their site for that.
Just as an FYI, you can retract a bid as long as it's 12 hours or more before the auction closes.
It's not generally encouraged but it is possible. If you don't abuse it and there genuinely was a mistake it won't reflect badly on you.
Also recently I had a repeat customer that asked if I'd let her cancel her win, she had good reasons and we just did a mutual agreement to withdraw. So you could also try writing to the seller and if they're a reasonable person they may work with you.
Wow, YOU are a nice seller! Yes, the seller did tell me to retract my bid if there was still time. Thing was I didn't know HOW to do that. But was willing to honor my bid anyhow since my ignorance wasn't a good excuse.
Wondering, how is it you can retract just your TOP bid that doesn't show yet? That's the one I regretted. But couldn't figure out how.
Anyhow, I will be more careful in the future.
Finally did get the item I was hoping for, only had to bid on 5 of them before scoring one. :)
"Wondering, how is it you can retract just your TOP bid that doesn't show yet? That's the one I regretted. But couldn't figure out how. "
I'd think you'd have to retract your bid and start over with a smaller amount. Not sure how well that would go over. But if you're still willing to bid it shouldn't matter. I don't know if that would be considered abuse or not though.
ETA: if you go to the top of the eBay screen and click on eBay Help
"how can I retract my bid" is number #3 on the top ten questions list. There's a link there that explains how to do it.

Thank-you, I've reviewed that.
Anyone know off hand, how long after winning a bid you have to make your payment?
Most sellers set their own time limits. 10 days is common, usually for paying by snail mail. But a seller can file a non-paying bidder complaint after 7 days.
Thank-you, yes I see it is specific to a sale. Thank-you so much!
Some require payment in 3 days. Always read the full listing sometimes what seems to be a bargain is way outweighed by outrageous shipping charges.
"eyes"
Yeah I saw that on some book. The SHIPPING was 17 and change?!! HAHA!
