Hosta propagation

Saint Louis, MO

Is there a way to propagate hostas from leaf or stems?

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

I don't know if that's feaseable, devision is the way I go about propagate hostas.

North Augusta, ON

I have on occasion rooted a leaf in a glass of water...if there is enough stem attached. You know, when you're dividing and the shovel cuts one off...I don't have the heart to throw them in the compost pile so I stick them in a glass of water...some have rooted.

Johns Island, SC

I've done that with lots of plants for the same reason, threegardeners, with the same (surprised) results. Some plants just root better in water. Some don't. I'm always surprised at what I find, and it's fun! I have a baby Sabel palmetto offshoot that accidentally got whacked this summer that I stuck in a jar of water thinking it was a goner. It wasn't. It's now potted up and doing fine! Go figure!

Wow! Great answers everybody. I knew I could propagate by division but sometimes I can't get to get more of one variety to fill a border or something. I also wanted to know if people have ever tried propagating with just the leaves in the same manner that you can propagate begonia leaves.

HI:
If you are feeling ambisous you can trytissue culture. Google kitchen culture. they have a beginers kit for about $100.00. I have thought about trying it myself.
Hope this helps

I know what you mean it looks tough but I think the system they sell is pretty cook book but 100.00 is a lot of money to just play with something.
