It's a young tree, this is it's first year flowering. Was a 5' seedling that went into the ground in 2006 then froze nearly to the ground during our horrible freeze that winter. Now it stands I don't know how high but it's getting tall, is healthy, and is flowering, has been flowering for a bit now, not a ton of flowers but some. I have pollinators like crazy so that is not an issue. Why might it not be setting seed? It's a Mexican native so it can't be the heat, right? Maybe it is waiting for a cool spell?
caesalpinia platyloba not setting seeds?
I haven't grown this particular Caesalpinia, but I know my C. gilliesii bloomed last year for the first time but didn't give me any seeds. This year it bloomed a lot more and I have several seed pods forming. This year was the first bloom year for my C. mexicana and although it's had a fair amount of blooms for a while, I see no sign of seedpods on it yet. I don't know if it has to do with the amount of blooms or something else but I wouldn't necessarily worry if you don't get seeds this year, hopefully next year it will. Or you might just need to give it more time this year--my C. gilliesii started blooming months ago and I just recently found the seedpods, so it could be that yours will have some in a month or so.
Thanks, I will be patient. truth is I was thrilled to see flowers this year, I will be happy to see pods next year. Am just eager to see others in the area have the chance to grow it, such a good tree for our area and impossible to get.
Do you have a picture of it? I love Caesalpinias and I'm not familiar with this one so I'd love to see what the flowers look like!
The top of the tree this year, I'd guess it's about 12' now but has really just started growing for the season. It's a heat and sun lover, doesn't even think about growing until temps are staying above 100, then keeps growing into fall when the new growth comes out with some color. Wasn't deciduous this winter and had no die back, lost all it's leaves slowly over spring and early summer. We'll have to see how it does as it gets older.
I'm generally only interested in them for the flowers! LOL They don't look that boring though, maybe not as flashy as some but still pretty!
You wouldn't like them lol, very small.
Oh, OK, guess they look more impressive in the closeup shots!
