We've topped 1500 in database

Whoohoo we've topped 1500 plants in the database. I didn't even have to stay up all night either ;)

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

I'm trying to make an effort, too. Looks good. Keep up the good work!

It's getting better every day too' Me
either Baa,lol' Smiln32 you're doing
great too,lets all contribute'

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

I am so proud of ya'll - you're doing a tremendous job! Keep up the good work!!!!

We have come a long way in just 30 days, thanks to Baa, smilin32, and many others who have added entry after entry to the database.

Now I wonder just how many DGers have a "badge of honor" on their home page? What's a badge of honor? It's a blue link to the entries you've made in the database.

Once you contribute something, it'll pop up automatically. Think of it as an "I voted today" or "I gave blood today" sticker. It's a great feeling to be part of an effort that helps others.

If you visit someone's page and see a badge, be sure to thank them - they've helped create a database of plants, photos and descriptions, all written by real-life gardeners.

And if you don't have a badge yet? Better hurry - the clock is ticking............

Used some of that time while everyone was in the Chat Room to add to it. I know that when the winter dolldrums set in and they will, that everyone WILL have lots of TIME to add many, many more! I spend those winter months catching up on my research and garden education, so why not take advantage of our marvelous Data Base, not only to learn from it, but to Enhance it as well.

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

Good thoughts, Eyes. Hmmm, maybe we should start planning another contest for this winter?

Right on "Eyes" and also thinking of the
future,hopefully our entries will become
our "Legacy". What a wonderful gift for
everyone' Thank you GV for the encouragement
and accolades' BRAVO to you and everyone
working much harder than us to create
this database'Standing Ovations'''''

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

As of right now, we need 72 (give or take) plants to hit 1600.

That requires quite a bit of effort for a few folks to add that many, but would be a piece of cake if 72 more DGers will pick a plant and add it. :)

Mz and Sis - I'm right behind ya. It's a good afternoon to rest here - cloudy, and chance of rain = PERFECT napping weather :)

Where's the afternoon shift? Some of the folks that have been holding back, telling themselves they'll join in the fun......tomorrow? Well, tomorrow is here.......and there's no time like the present.

Oklahoma City, OK(Zone 7a)

Winter doldrums? What's that? Here, it means there aren't any mosquitos, so you'd better get outside and enjoy it - EVEN IF IT'S ONLY 30 degrees!

Ok, back to the plant database...

Palmyra, VA(Zone 7a)

54 more togo!! I think I entered all the species and varieties of Passiflora at my place.

Well I am doing some plants just havent gotten all the info.
So I promise I will contribute soon.

Good grief the entries are coming in fast!! I added a plant half an hour ago, and it's already scrolled off the homepage!

We have already had 105 new plants added to the database today.

Dave

I wrote this to Go_Vols in E-mail today. It's worth sharing with everyone else:

My original vision for the DB is that it won't be one of those dry and drab, list 60,000 species databases. Instead, it would be a living document, written by fellow gardeners (rather than scientists or by students putting the data together for an assignment). This will contain real practical information about the plants that most people care about.

If we reach the 5,000 most popular and interesting species, I will consider the PDB to have reached every ounce of potential that it can.

Did you know that the Plants Database by itself draws an amazing number of traffic to DG? Listen to this:

I just now ran some numbers. I took a snapshot of the last 100,000 pageviews to occur on DG.

Roughly 6.1% of those hits were people accessing pages within the PDB.

Now check this out: The sampling I took is from 29/Aug/2001:16:22:56 to present.

During that period of time, 434 visitors came to DG through a search engine or link from another site, directly into the Plants Database.

That's about 1 new visitor every 3 minutes, finding DG for the first time thanks to a search resulting in a Plants Database hit.

Averaged out, that's about:

20 new visitors an hour.
480 new visitors per day.
3,360 per week
13,440 per month
and
161,280 per year

and this isn't "fuzzy math". It's hard numbers that show that the Plants Database has an incredibly significant role in bringing new members into Dave's Garden.

And it's all thanks to you and the work you've done it. Well done!

Dave

My fingers are on fire....watch out!

Murfreesboro, TN(Zone 7a)

(blushing - can't believe Dave put that message on here!)

All I can say is that I am in deep gratitude to all to my fellow DG gardeners who have labored on this effort with me (and don't quit yet - we have until 12 midnight DGT!)

When I joined DG, the database was still pretty small. I spent some time on those cold winter days when I couldn't get outside and REALLY garden, and it grew a little. PoppySue and others added to it before I came to DG, and they've continued to contribute tremendous amounts of information and photos.

My goal for the database is the same as Dave's - that it will be for and by gardeners; capturing our real-life experiences with the plants contained in it. And if it brings in more gardeners to join us, that's icing on the cake!

My hat is off to all of you who have brought us this far, and I am eagerly awaiting the final tallies to see how close we get to 3,000 entries/descriptions/photos. (I suspect we're getting pretty close......)
