New Orleans, LA(Zone 8b)

Claire, beautiful photos! I love your multi grafted trees.

I want to try growing one of my coop plumies in the ground. It will be close to the house. But don't worry vossner, I won't blame you if I lose it.

Lana

Lana, why not do like the folks in Houston and plant it in the ground, then dig it up when it goes dormant?

New Orleans, LA(Zone 8b)

I was thinking for the front of the house. If I plunge with pot and all, someone might be tempted to steal it? Plumerias are popular around my neighborhood.

Clare,

I am salivating! The pictures are beautiful!! I love Kyle's Pink. It's too bad that Florida Colors do not have it.

Also, thank you for giving the name of a supplier that can ship to Canada. I am very, very happy! No more seeds for me!

Charmaine

Having recently been a victim of plumeria theft, I would not recommend putting them where you feel people will have easy access to them.

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Lana and Charmaine.

Lana, you can still plant and dig up for the winter. Paula in Texas and lot of other people do it that way.

Charmaine, you are very welcome. I love Florida Colors Nursery and have gotten quite a bit of my collection from them. They may not have Kyle's Pink, but they have so many other glorious ones. I would recommend 'Tahitian Sunset' as a lovely one with many of the same color shades as 'Kyle's Pink.'

Hetty, that's terrible!

Clare, I will do that. If I dig deep enough, no one will suspect that it's in a pot. Unless you meant to plant it directly in the ground and dig it up in the winter?

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Lana, either way will work. Some people do dig up for the winter. Here's an old picture of Paula's dig up day, which I believe is around Thanksgiving for her.

Wow, that was a lot of digging! Thanks for sharing.

Boy I would hate to have to do that every year.....

Must be nice to live in Florida...

yeah, that's what i'll be doing around thanksgiving.

Ellerbe, NC(Zone 8a)

Claire, Your Plumie pictures are sooooo gorgeous. I would love to have that many Plumerias. Unfortuneatly, cold and no room limits me right now. I'm gonna have to look into those grafted trees. That sounds like my solution. LOL

Jealously drooling on my keyboard!

OMG! You're killin' me here! How many plumies do you have?
I want to come camp out in YOUR back yard. The scent is so strong I can smell it from here. LOL

Rox

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Rox! I have a lot for sure:-) I love the strong-scented ones too.

Mulberry, FL

Clare the big question how many years have you been at this? Plumeria wonderland! If you could just bottle that smell it would be the best. Love that graft tree I have to do more before I even think about it. Your grafts look better than some of the ones that were shipped to me. Trying to find a tool that I can buy to do this mine had too much gap in it.

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

finally, I'm trying out my new camera and one of the first pics I took were of plumies. Here is Hilo Beauty, which I recently transplanted into a 30 gal pot.

Hi Dana, I can't even remember how long -- maybe ten years that I've been gardening and the last six that I've been growing plumerias. I use a sharp kitchen knife with no serrated edges for a grafting knife.

Wow, Nery! 30-gallon already? I didn't realize that it was a big tree. Most of mine are root-bound in 15-gallon containers and could use 25-gallon containers. Yours must be 7-8 years old to warrant a container that big. I know you know better than to over-pot a plumie! Your reds are gorgeous!

East Texas, United States(Zone 8a)

You know, I might have mispoken. I'll measure the pot and come back here. The plumie definitely needed the size but maybe it's not 30 gal.

This is paranoid, I realize, but after reading Hetti's mishap w/ the stolen plumies and also hearing from my fave local nursery owner that she, too, had stolen plumies, I am less inclined to be braggie about mine. I've been thinking about placing a warning sign with this caption:

caution, my dog will eat you alive if you even think about messing w/ my plumies, that is, if I don't get to you first"

What a cutie pie! Yes, it is very sad about the theft. I keep mine behind two locked gates and have cameras in place, and I have a policy of shooting first and asking questions later! I start to get uncomfortable too when people want to see the whole layout of my yard. It's a sad state of affairs, but one always needs to be security conscious in this day and age.

Clare how old is that Chompoo Paan ? nice pics Clare Paul

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Thanks, Paul! I had to go back and check my records. That 'Chompoo Paan' was sent to me by my dear friend Kukiat in 07/2005 so it is 3 years old.

Clare,

I noticed the pictures for Tahitian Sunset are different. It's really lovely to see the changing colors on the same tree. Also, thank you for recomending it.

Looking at he collection at Florida Colors, I really liked the pictures on Aussi confetti. Please let me know what you know about this variety.

Thanks,
Charmaine

Ventura, United States(Zone 10b)

Hi Charmaine, I love 'Tahitian Sunset.' As the flower fades in color, the center is brought out, and it does make it look like there are changing colors. You are most welcome^_^ I hope you enjoy it as much as I do. It is a reliable bloomer too and blooms every season.

'Aussie Confetti' looks really pretty and looks a lot like 'Cooktown Sunset,' I think, at least from pictures, which probably doesn't mean anything. 'Fruit Salad Caboulture' is another similar-looking one, and I have that one, but it hasn't bloomed for me yet.

I don't know from first-hand experience about this one, but if you call Carol at Florida Colors Nursery, I'm sure she would fill you in about it. I know it is a fruit salad variety from Australia, and if I had to guess, it is probably a tall grower. If you are concerned about having a tall grower -- by the way, Tahitian Sunset seems to be a tall grower too -- because you'll be keeping it in a container, you might want to opt for something that is a little more compact, like a low grower. You could ask Carol about the growth habit of all three before deciding and also ask her about the fragrance of all three if you have a preference in that area.
