CLOSED: What's this eating my Echinacea???
I believe that this is a camouflaged looper, Synchlora aerata (Lepidoptera: Geometridae), see http://ourfcs.friendscentral.org/moths/synchlora_aerata_larvae.htm and http://www.duke.edu/~jspippen/naturephotos/camouflagedlooper050802-5092facez.jpg for representative images. These larvae attach bits of whatever plant part they are feeding upon to their body, using specialized setae. The adults are small green moths known as wavy-lined emeralds - see http://www.acleris.com/dls/07058a.html for an image.
Cool!
Thanks for the info and links suunto.
I've only seen caddis fly larvae, which do similar but underwater.........
That is so cool. Thank you so much for your help!
