You should have seen the gaper's block it created last time I was in the area.
EWWWW!
Dave that last shot is really great!
you beat me in size for sure with that ant. Mrs-Ed :D, mine are tiny red ants and a pain at the hummingbird feeder I also have the black, but not on the feeders mostly where the drips falls. That one was empty, but left it there so the ants would leave the fresh one alone. I also have one on the ground for bait for the ants, they go in and drown.
Wonderful shots Dave.
Gr8 shots Dave. I'm surprised you have any room left on the camera for anything but bluebirds, LOL. Awesome pics in the other forum as well.
Fabulous. Really entertained me this evening. I think my fav is Pelle's #2 - the little guy up to his eye balls in the flower. But all super.
Awwwwwwww Pelle those are nice.
3 is my favorite. Great shots, Pelle.
Rose that is just so utterly beautiful it (almost) brings tears to my eyes. That was well worth the wait.
Aww thanks Margaret..
Great job Rose!
Thanks guys for the nice comments on my pics.
Some really awesome shots. Y'all beat out some of the magazine and book photos that I have seen! My bird photography is lousy. :-(
I don't know if y'all just photograph birds or actually study their behavior too. I am hoping both ...
I have a question. You can see that I live in south-central Florida. I had my very first hummer at my feeders this past November. It (or possibly others, too) hung around until about the middle of April, then none. I figured it (or they) migrated North for Summer. Well, the middle of June, one (or more) start showing up again. Both birds I saw in November and current appear to be females. So I don't know if it is the same bird. Probably not due to the perching habits. I saw my newest bird this past weekend nectaring from all the flowers before going to the feeder. I am talking a lot of flowers! That surprised me kinda, because they often go to the feeder first.
Well, I haven't seen it since the weekend. I have been watching for it early morning and late afternoon. Nothing. I would guess it is too late in the season to fly North? If so, do nesting birds come around and then suddenly disappear when raising young? I read that they eat a lot more insects when raising babies. Could that be what is happening here? Or do these birds move to new areas frequently? The one I had in November seemed to stick around for months and was very territorial of the feeder and my backyard. So being new to hummers, I'm a bit confused and curious.
Added to say:
Does anyone have a good internet links for more information on Hummers?

Hi Becky, You have it right when saying they seem to disappear when raising yound because of protein needs.
If they left Fla. it wouldn't be North so much as it would be West and/or South.
I always see mine using the feeders alot before leaving to migrate. ^_^
Here's a few I have found, but if you just Google hummingbird you will find tons of things.

Thanks, Pelle and Brad! I will check out those links more thoroughly. I tend to skim a lot. :-)

Nanny, nice moth and flower!!
Very nice Nanny and Pelle!
Lovely as always.
Lovely pics Rose!
Thanks Pelle and Mrs. Ed! I just received an email from the St. Louis area (north of me) and they have Hummers showing up heading south! Is this about the right timing? Seems like they just got here and now they're gonne leave? I'm not ready for this...boo hoo.....
How do they know that they are heading south?? Are they banded?
I do have to say that mine usually show up at the end of August and stay until the end of September. So I will be looking forward to their arrival. Hopefully all of my salvia and such will be blooming too.
