I have small space in my garden (well it cannot be garden as it isn't so big), which is about 16 x 12 inches in size. This space doesn't get any sunlight at all, but only the heat from the wall that's shading it (Here in India it really goes up to 104 deg. F sometimes. So, I tried some Poppy Seeds here, but it's been about 2 weeks now (as I read somewhere that it needs a dark space for germination - may be I'm wrong) and none have germinated yet.
So I'm thinking may be I was wrong about sowing Poppies there. If I am, can you suggest me something that would germinate and survive in that space. Now that space really looks barren and that being near the entrance to my house makes it look more horrible.
Would Pansies be a good idea? There? I'm not good at it, so I need you all experts' help.
A seed for the permanent shade
Something like poppies might need dark to germinate, but it's going to need light once it sprouts, it's not going to grow well and bloom in full shade. Pansies don't like heat especially, they're more of a cool weather plant so they may not be happy there, and I think they'll need some light to bloom too. I'm assuming your winters don't get too cold, so you might try some of the things that are typically grown as houseplants for low light areas such as Sansevieria. I have no idea about starting things like that from seed, it might be easier to buy a plant instead.
I'd try Nigella self-seeding annual. It can take the heat in Australia so you might have luck with it. 'Love-in-a-Mist" should work. 'African Bride" has self sowed for me and is very pretty in full shade although it's usually advertised for sun. I would sow it direct in your fall as it hates to be transplanted. It really will need something else with it to show really well but its a start. Hope this helps.
Red salvia (Salvia coccinea) will do well in the shade. Sanseveria was a great suggestion, as long as you don't get too much rain there. Would a vine be a good plant in that area?
Hi All! Thank you so much for all the suggestions. I'm still trying to find those seeds here (it's really difficult to get them in India). But finally one poppy seedling came out, but I've already planted a Jasmine creeper there that grows wild here in India no matter what kind of soil it is or how much sun it gets (It does better in sunny location though), but let me see what I can come up with. Will keep you posted.
Good luck, let us know!
