Question about removing spent blooms

Hammond, LA(Zone 8b)

Do I need to remove the fowers after they have bloomed and gotten all "wilty" and dry? Mine lose the flower and there is a think white strand left where the flower was attatched. Do I remove that too?

Thanks, Jennifer

i usually leave the flowers as the seeds are forming where the flower leaves off. the white thing is the part that was pollinated and needs to be there for seeds.

i dont usually notice them as once they fall off more usually come.

Sometimes I will remove the dried petals, but only if there is no seed pod forming . . . if there is a pod, I leave the petals, even though I don't think they serve any other purpose.

Thanks guys. So the seed pod will for IN the spent flower, or where the white stringy part is? Or somewhere else? Sorry to have so many questions, just trying to figure it out.

In all fairness, I could remove the dried petals on any bloom . . . I just wait to see if there is a seed pod forming first. That part may just boil down to personal preference.

jlp222-Jennifer - Welcome to the MG forum...

If you want seeds, don't remove anything...just leave all the parts in place and a seedpod will form at the base of where the flower petal was attached...because if you break off the pistil before all of the pollen tubes have formed or if the ovary breaks off with the upper part of the pistil then seeds will not form...but if you aren't interested to harvest seeds, then remove any wilted parts that you'd like to...

Thanks! That makes sense. Actually all of the answers make sense :)

OK, after work, with all of my new knowledge, I went out to inspect my plants. I have a seed pod! Do I let it stay until it falls off? I am probably WAY too excited, but this is my first year with MGs and my first pod. : )

Jennifer - don't do anything with the seed pod until it turns brown. It will get dry, like paper. Once that happens, you can remove the seeds from the pod.

Thanks!
